The Porsche 918 Spyder is on the road: Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, has taken the driving trials of the super sports car of the future a step further with completion of the initial prototypes. The 918 Spyder is planned for production at the end of September 2013, with the first customer deliveries currently scheduled for the United States late in 2013. "What we are doing with the 918 Spyder is redefining driving fun, efficiency and performance," said Wolfgang Hatz, Member of the Executive Board Research and Development of Porsche AG.

The prototypes, their camouflage harking back to historical Porsche 917 racing cars, signal the final touches to the 918 Spyder. The focus is on the interplay between the highly sophisticated individual drive components. The combination of combustion engine and two independent electric motors – one on the front axle and one in the drive line, acting on the rear wheels – poses completely new demands on the development of the operating strategies. "They are therefore a critical component in this vehicle into which we have put all of our expertise and capacity for innovation," said Wolfgang Hatz. These operating strategies and the development of the software to go with them are one of Porsche's core competences. Both of them have a major influence on the extreme driving fun to be had with the 918 Spyder and they make possible a unique combination of minimal fuel consumption and maximum performance. The initial results of the driving trials are in line with the high expectations placed on the 918 Spyder.

The super sports car is designed as a plug-in hybrid vehicle combining a high-performance combustion engine with cutting-edge electric motors for extraordinary performance: on the one hand, the dynamics of a racing machine boasting more than 770 hp, on the other hand, fuel consumption in the region of three litres per 100 kilometres. Moreover, Porsche is breaking yet more new ground with the technology demonstrator with spectacular solutions such as the full carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) monocoque with unit carrier, fully adaptive aerodynamics, adaptive rear-axle steering and the upward-venting "top pipes" exhaust system. In the process, the 918 Spyder is offering a glimpse of what Porsche Intelligent Performance may be capable of in future.

We had a chance to chat with this down to earth sweetheart on her modeling career and how she's enjoying winter so far in the land down under.

IO: How are you Rosie?

Rosie: I'm Freezing!! I'm wearing furry fluffy boots all day and all night because your side of the world stole the sun (laughing)

IO: (laughing) it's called sharing and it's our turn to have it, so how did you get in to modeling?

Rosie: Fate (laughing) Actually, it was quite the accident. I came on location to do Hair and Makeup on a photo shoot and the model never showed up. The photographer had already booked a studio and instead of wrapping up, I was put in front of the camera and VOILA!!

IO: That's awesome, sounds like one of those Hollywood stories, what's your favorite part of modeling so far?

Rosie: It may not seem so but modeling is hard work. It can be relaxed or it can be hectic on a shoot; the highlight for me is learning from the professional team working behind the scenes. We always have a good laugh and the end product is really gratifying too. Hopefully I can show my kids one day and they’d be proud of their Mama!

IO: Do you have a favorite type of event to attend?

Rosie: I’ve modeled at a few Motor Shows we have here in Australia, although fun, a real festival or carnival where I can get Fairy Floss and hot chips with lots of tomato sauce takes my pick. Apparently you guys call it ‘Cotton Candy’ but it will always be ‘Fairy Floss’ here. Represent.

IO: (laughing) Alright, time for a serious question, what are you driving?

Rosie: I drive a manual Black Suzuki Swift and I’ve had her for a year now and she is divine. I Guess I love my girls curvy and well rounded, The Audi HAS to be my next ride. Oh and let me set the record, we don’t ride kangaroos but it sounds like fun though.

IO: Ok, that answers my other question (laughing) what's your dream car?

Rosie: I’ve always loved the Porsche Boxster but this Audi S5 Convertible, DAYUMMM!!

IO: Nice choices, do you have time for any hobbies?

Rosie: I’m really into my music and I try to find time to fit in the rehearsals whenever I can. My muso friends and I do a lot of covers which we take down to the city streets of Melbourne and perform a busking set. I have a love affair with my microphone. I also love family time. My family is my ultimate hobby. NAWW. (laughs)

IO: We're going to hold you to singing for us one day; what are your other likes?

Rosie: Hmm.. I like long walks on the beach… writing our names in the sand… chasing each other in slow motion… (laughs) JOKES, I’m just trolling. I love my girlfriends, they definitely keep me sane. Sparkly things and a perfectly brewed chai latte ALWAYS makes my day. I’m quite a simple person. I try to tolerate and like most things, it helps to be easy going. Appreciation is nice too. Everybody should be more appreciative and respectful.

IO: Any real dislikes?

Rosie: I guess everyone dislikes negativity and I could say the same too, but man are mosquito bites the worst. I actually have this battery operated electric racquet thing that zaps mosquitos and other insects when you wave it at them. I get really into it and look like a bit of a dork but I guess I’m just…competitive? (laughs) Traffic. Yep, not my favorite. I gotta say you can’t dislike anything until you try.

BMW today released the first images and information on the next generation BMW 3 Series Sports Wagon and announced that, as with the two previous generations, this model will be offered in the US.

Unlike anything else on the market, the all-new 3 Series Sports Wagon will again offer the flexibility and utility one would expect from a premium wagon combined with the driving dynamics of the quintessential sport sedan, the BMW 3 Series. The new BMW 3 Series Sports Wagon will launch in Europe later this year and is set to arrive in US showrooms in Spring 2013. Powertrain details for the US as well as pricing, specifications and standard/optional equipment will be announced at a later date.

Like its Sedan sibling, the new 3 Series Sports Wagon is slightly larger than its predecessor, most notably its wider track (front + 37 mm/1.46 in., rear + 48 mm/1.85 in.). The car’s length (+ 97 mm/3.66 in.) and wheelbase (+ 50 mm/1.96 in.) also accentuate its sporting promise. Inside the new BMW 3 Series Sports Wagon, rear passengers will appreciate the noticeable increase in space made possible by the larger dimensions. These larger dimensions also pay dividends in utility with nearly ten percent more cargo volume both with the rear seats up and when folded.

The new 3 Series Sports Wagon will be the next model to offer BMW Lines as a way to tailor the car to individual tastes, just as with the Sedan, by choosing from a trio of trim and equipment variants – the Sport Line, Luxury Line and Modern Line. Each presents its own individual take on the character of the Sports wagon, with exclusive, high-quality trim and material combinations. For the enthusiast who wants to go beyond even the Sport Line, the M Sport Line will also be offered because it is, after all, a BMW 3 Series at its heart.

Striking face with precise contours and multi-faceted surfaces.
Characteristically, the sporting nature of the new BMW 3 Series Sports Wagon is made apparent to the eye by its wide track. By accentuating the width of the car, the multi-faceted surfaces of the expressive front fascia give the 3 Series Sports Wagon a more athletic face than ever.

A three-dimensional interpretation of the upright, slightly forward-slanting BMW kidney grille emphasizes an assured presence. LED accent lights positioned like eyebrows above the traditional four round headlights with corona rings (if Adaptive Xenon headlights are specified) lend an extra intensity to the classic BMW focused look. Clearly defined headlight surrounds now extend up to the frame of the kidney grille, merging the headlights and grille into a single stylistic element and adding further emphasis to the car’s broad-set stance. The 3 Series Sports Wagon replaces the central air intake of its predecessor with two larger intakes, which are positioned underneath the headlights to the outer edges of the front fascia and add extra depth to the car’s sporty look. On the left and right edges of the main ducts are small vertical intakes which help create the “Air Curtain”. This new technology improves air flow around the front wheels, enhancing aerodynamic efficiency and reducing fuel consumption at higher speeds.

The closely spaced, squat openings of the kidney grille, with their eye-catching surrounds, form the most prominent element of the new BMW 3 Series Sports Wagon’s front design. It is also where the precise lines of the dynamically contoured hood begin at the base of the A pillars and flow over the full length of the hood. The result is a front that appears lower-slung, giving 3 Series Sports Wagon a clear sporting edge when viewed head-on.

Precise lines produce a silhouette that enhances the car’s dynamic impact.
Powerfully taut surfaces with sweeping lines dominate the side view of the BMW 3 Series Sports Wagon, stretching the car visually and lending extra verve to its dynamic stance. The flanks of the car are shaped by an eye-catching double character line running alongside each other. The higher character line emerges out of the low-slung nose and flows over the front wheel with an understated sweep, in a nod to the wagon’s fleetness of foot. The second character line develops lower down behind the front wheel and follows a delicately arching path towards the rear. Together, they reinforce the dynamic wedge shape of the car’s flanks. As well as providing a discreet increase in muscularity in the rear section below the character line, these styling cues also create vivid light and shade effects, which draw further attention to the car’s wide track.

The car’s athletic overall impression is emphasized by the steeply raked D-pillars, the angle of the rear window and the subtly wedge-shaped geometry of the window surfaces. The roofline – which slopes downwards slightly to the rear and is extended visually by a spoiler – and the “Hofmeister kink” at the foot of the D-pillar also generate a sense of dynamic tension. The finely balance between the greenhouse and the body lends the new BMW 3 Series Sports Wagon a sporty, elegant and nimble look, while the rear lights extend well into the sides of the body and combine with its flowing lines to create a harmonious transition between the flanks and rear section.

The rear of the new BMW 3 Series Sports Wagon also boasts a blend of sporting elegance and modern practicality. The horizontal lines and L-shaped lights set far to the outer edges accentuate the subtly flared fenders and the wider track. Two integrated bars of LEDs allow a slim light design and ensure they maintain an appearance that is instantly recognizable as a BMW both day and night. The positioning of the lights at the outer edges of the rear underline the car’s hunkered-down stance on the road. The large tailgate opening and low sill make loading and unloading bulky items that much easier.

The new BMW 3 Series Sports Wagon again features a rear window that opens separately from the tailgate. The window is unlocked electrically via a button on the rear window wiper arm and opened by hand. This practical function makes it easier to load and unload smaller items – especially when space is tight, as the rear window opens up rather than out.

In order to make access to its generous cargo area easier, a power tailgate will be offered for the first time on a 3 Series Sports Wagon. Getting into the cargo area can be done at the touch of a button, either on the remote key or from inside the interior. Access is made even easier when Comfort Access is ordered, which will include the Hands Free Opening Tailgate. If one approaches the new 3 Series Sports Wagon with hands full, one need only stick a foot under the rear bumper and the tailgate automatically swings open.

Practicality and versatility: Hallmarks for the new 3 Series Sports Wagon
The new BMW 3 Series Sports Wagon offers remarkable flexibility. A net as well as an additional strap along the right side panel can be used to help secure cargo. Four tie-downs are integrated into the cargo floor. A net along the left-hand panel will also be available. A pair of coat hooks and an addition 12-volt outlet add an extra measure of flexibility. A storage tray under the load compartment floor and a deep stowage compartment on the left-hand side of the cargo area can accommodate smaller items. Another neat twist, the luggage compartment cover canbe stowed away under the load compartment floor, allowing it to be kept inthe car even when not in use. Also standard is a separatepartition net, which can be employed in a variety of ways even when the rearseat backrests are folded down. The rear seats can be folded down in three sections in a 40:20:40 split. The large through-loading facilityallows the new 3 Series Sports Wagon to carry four adults and longer items, such as skis or snowboards, at the same time.

In addition to the flexibility and utility offered by the interior of the new BMW 3 Series Sports Wagon, other features unique to this model includes roof-rails to accommodate all manner of storage racks for everything from bicycles and skis to cargo boxes. It will also be available with a full glass panoramic sunroof.

BMW ConnectedDrive: The latest in safety and infotainment

With its broad range of driver assistance systems and mobility services, all offered as part of BMW ConnectedDrive, the new BMW 3 Series Sports Wagon sets a new benchmark when it comes to safety, convenience and infotainment. To ensure that the available features deliver the maximum benefit, the exchange of information between the passengers, the vehicle and the outside world is managed by BMW ConnectedDrive.

The new BMW 3 Series Sports Wagon is available with a full-color Head-Up Display. It projects key information in sharp resolution onto the windshield in the driver’s direct field of vision. Depending on the vehicle specification the speed limit is noted in addition to the car’s speed. The driver can also see navigation instructions and various alerts in the Head-Up Display. Thanks to the wide variety of driver assistance systems available in the new BMW 3 Series range, more information can be placed in the driver’s direct line-of-sight while their eyes remain squarely on the road.

State-of-the-art camera technology provides the potential for new levels of safety and convenience. Active Safety options include Lane Departure Warning as well as Blind Spot Detection. Backing up and parking both are made easier with the available Rear-view Camera with Top View which provides a bird’s-eye view of the car. Another convenience-enhancing assistance system is the BMW Parking Assistant, which takes charge of maneuvering into parking spaces making parallel-parking a breeze.

BMW Assist, a globally unique mobility service, comprises among other features a telephone information service and BMW’s industry-leading enhanced Automatic Collision Notification function with automatic detection of the vehicle location. BMW Assist also includes Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity.

Other innovative technologies allow the integration of the Apple iPhone and other smartphones as well as music players, including the use of Internet-based services. The Apps option enables iPhone users, among other things, to receive Internet radio stations and to display Facebook and Twitter posts on the onboard monitor. The 2nd Round of the 2012 AUTOBACS SUPER GT, “FUJI GT 500km RACE” was staged at Fuji Speedway (of Shizuoka Prefecture) over May 3rd and 4th amid the Golden Week holidays in Japan.

This race is one of the GT rounds fighting 110 laps and where throughout, the greatest focus is on how the teams may work out strategies effective over the long distance as bringing out the best performances by machines, their tyres and the drivers, as these factors can really determine the win-or-lose outcome of the race. Thus, in spite of troubling weather, the big race over the two days drew a total of 83,000 GT fans eager to witness the large excitement this race should bring.

After a confused early going, DENSO SC430 takes the lead mid-race, but ...

A light rain began to fall on the starting grid as the time for the formation lap approached at 2:00 in the afternoon. This brought out the safety car to lead the start of the 110-lap race. It this point, all of the cars were still fitted with slick tires.

Shortly after the start, the rain grew heavier and after the opening lap behind the safety car the No. 36 PETRONAS TOM'S SC430 driven by Kazuki Nakajima became the first to return to the pit to change to rain tires. At the end of the second lap, all the cars in the GT500 class with the exception of the No. 8 ARTA HSV-010 (Ralph Firman) and the already re-fitted No. 36 returned to the pit. With the lead order now changed and the SC finally off the track, the race began in earnest from the end of the third lap. At this point the order of the top six machines was the No. 8 ARTA HSV-010 in the lead followed by the No. 36 PETRONAS TOM'S SC430, No. 6 ENEOS SUSTINA SC430 (Kazuya Oshima), No. 23 MOTUL AUTECH GT-R (Satoshi Motoyama), No. 38 ZENT CERUMO SC430 (Yuji Tachikawa) and the No. 39 DENSO KOBELCO SC430 (Hiroaki Ishiura). But, being the only machine still on slick tires, the No. 8 ARTA HSV-010 couldn't hold the pace, and by the 4th lap it had dropped to the back of the pack. On the next lap No. 8 collided with a GT300 class car, sustaining serious damage to the front end that forced it out of the race.

Now it was the No. 36 PETRONAS TOM'S SC430 that held the lead, followed by the No. 6 ENEOS SUSTINA SC430 and No. 32 EPSON HSV-010 (Yuhki Nakayama). By the seventh lap the rain began to lift and the No. 23 MOTUL AUTECH GT-R caught and passed the No. 32 EPSON HSV-010 to move into 3rd position.
Moving up in the rear, the No. 24 D'station ADVAN GT-R (Hironobu Yasuda) and No. 32 EPSON HSV-010, as well as the No. 1 S Road REITO MOLA GT-R (Ronnie Quintarelli), No. 35 KeePer Kraft SC430 (Andrea Caldarelli) and No. 19 WedsSport ADVAN SC430 (Seiji Ara) had all changed to slick tires but were as yet unable to catch the lead group.

Seeing the improved track condition, the leading No. 36 PETRONAS TOM'S SC430returned to the pit on the 15th lap. At the same time the No. 23 MOTUL AUTECH GT-R running in 3rd position also returned to change tires and moved ahead of the No. 36 PETRONAS TOM'S SC430 with a faster pit stop.
The No. 6 ENEOS SUSTINA SC430 that had been running in the lead in the meantime returned to the pit on the 17th lap to change to slick tires, but just after getting back on the track it overran the first turn. It hit a GT300 and was given a drive-through penalty that dropped it out of competition for the lead.

This put the No. 12 CALSONIC IMPUL GT-R (Joao Paulo de Oliveira) in the lead until it returned to the pit on lap 21, leaving the No. 38 ZENT CERUMO SC430 in the lead until it also made a pit stop on the 26th lap.

Amid the rapidly changing conditions, all the teams had to change their race strategies. This was evident when the No. 39 DENSO KOBELCO SC430 that had taken over the lead on lap 27 stretched its initial stint on to the 45th lap before returning to the pit and changing drivers from Ishiura to Juichi Wakisaka. At the same time, the No. 36 PETRONAS TOM'S SC430 in 2nd position made a pit stop and changed drivers from Nakajima to Richard Lyons, leaving the No. 12 CALSONIC IMPUL GT-R (Tsugio Matsuda) to take the lead again, with the No. 100 RAYBRIG HSV-010 (Naoki Yamamoto) moving into 2nd position.

By the middle stages of the race, the No. 12 CALSONIC IMPUL GT-R had built up a lead of over 20 seconds, but then a GT300 machine suffered a big crash at the end of the straight on the 62nd lap. This brought out the Safety Car , and when the entrance to the pit area was finally opened again on lap 65, the two leading machines, the No. 12 CALSONIC IMPUL GT-R and the No. 100 RAYBRIG HSV-010, both rushed into the pits at the same time.
This move put Wakisaka in the lead in the No. 39 DENSO KOBELCO SC430 fighting a three-way battle with the No. 23 MOTUL AUTECH GT-R and the No. 17 KEIHIN HSV-010 (Koudai Tsukakoshi). Wakisaka skillfully prevailed and was able to turn the wheel over to teammate Ishiura again with the lead intact on lap 82.

The CALSONIC IMPUL GT-R's final gamble

Looking to run a long stint from lap 65, No. 12 CALSONIC IMPUL GT-R (Oliveira) managed well in maintaining a roughly 10-second gap with the No. 100 RAYBRIG HSV-010 (Takuya Izawa) in 2nd and was able to pass the 90th lap in the lead, but then it began to rain again!

Oliveira struggled to hold the lead until the 103rd lap before rushing back to the pit and changing to intermediate tires. Unlike him, No. 100 RAYBRIG HSV-010, No. 39 DENSO KOBELCO SC430 and the No. 23 MOTUL AUTECH GT-R chose to stay out on the track running as they were.

That turned out to be the right choice, as the rain stopped quicker than expected. Racing on the tricky tack conditions, the fleeing No. 100 RAYBRIG HSV-010 was caught on the 106th lap and passed by the No. 39 DENSO KOBELCO SC430 in an exciting reverse of fortunes that gave No. 39's team their long-awaited first victory in eight years, since the Sepang round of 2004.

Finishing 2nd for the second race in a row was the No. 100 RAYBRIG HSV-010. In 3rd came the No. 23 MOTUL AUTECH GT-R, while the No.12 CALSONIC IMPUL GT-R that had been so close to victory was passed finally by the No. 36 PETRONAS TOM'S SC430 to end the race in 5th place.

A 2013 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 will lead the starting field of the 96th Indianapolis 500 to the green flag Sunday, May 27 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. With 638 horsepower, the Corvette ZR1 is the most powerful production car ever to pace the race.

This will be the 23rd time a Chevrolet has paced “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing” and the 11th time a Corvette is serving as the Pace Car. Both are event records. The 2013 model year will mark the 60th anniversary and the final year of production for the current generation Corvette.

“Corvette embodies pure performance, so the ZR1 is a perfect car to pace the most prestigious auto race in the world,” said Jeff Belskus, Indianapolis Motor Speedway Corporation president and chief executive officer. “Chevrolet is a great partner of the Speedway, and we share in the excitement of the upcoming 60th anniversary of the iconic Corvette brand. It’s even more meaningful to see a Chevrolet pacing the field at Indy since Chevy has returned as an engine supplier for the IZOD IndyCar Series for the first time since 2005.”

“This is a truly momentous year for Chevrolet when it comes to performance, with our continued success on and off track, and especially with our return to the IndyCar Series, powering some of the fastest cars on the circuit,” said Jim Campbell, GM vice president of Performance Vehicles and Motorsports. “I can’t think of a better way to mark the 60th Anniversary of Corvette than having it lead the starting field of the Indianapolis 500.”

A supercharged, 6.2-liter LS9 engine generating 638 horsepower helps to create the ZR1’s performance. Of all mass-production companies, Chevrolet is the leader in using carbon fiber. The lightweight material is used for structural components, including the front fenders, hood, roof, front splitter, rocker panels and floor pans. With a curb weight of 3,353 pounds, the ZR1 features a power-to-weight ratio of just 5.2 pounds per horsepower. The ZR1 also features advanced technology such as Magnetic Selective Ride Control, Launch Control system with Performance Track Management, a four-channel ABS system and Brembo carbon-ceramic disc brake rotors.

As a result, the ZR1 is the fastest Chevrolet ever produced, capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds, and capable of reaching a top speed of 205 mph. The ZR1 lapped the famed Nurburgring’ Nordschleife (“north loop”) in 7:19.63.

Corvette 60th Anniversary Package

The Corvette Pace Car features an exterior paint scheme and full body length stripe similar to that of the 60th Anniversary Package being made available on all 2013 Corvette models. The 60th Anniversary Package features an Arctic White exterior with a Blue Diamond leather-wrapped interior with suede accents. Convertible models will have a blue top.

Additional content includes a ZR1-style rear spoiler, special badging, gray-painted brake calipers and the “60th” logo on the wheel center caps, steering wheel and seat headrests. An optional graphics package adds full-length racing stripes in Pearl Silver Blue, including a tonal stripe stitched into the convertible top, extending the graphic theme over the roof.

For 2013, all Corvettes will feature 60th Anniversary badges on the fascias and the “waterfall” panel on convertible models, as well as 60th logos in the instrument panel gauge cluster and on the sill plates.

The 96th Indianapolis 500 is scheduled to start at noon (ET) Sunday, May 27. The driver of the Pace Car will be announced soon.

The world’s most fuel-efficient couple has done it again. John and Helen Taylor were determined to break the record for the farthest distance traveled on a single tank of fuel. They decided to attempt the record in the U.S. with a stock 2012 Volkswagen Passat SE TDI Clean Diesel vehicle equipped with a six-speed manual transmission. The previous record for the most miles covered on a single tank of diesel was 1526.6 miles, achieved with a VW Passat 1.6 BlueMotion® diesel in Europe.

The result? A new record of 1626.1 miles, achieved on one tank of ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel under real world driving conditions. That’s an incredible 99.5 miles better than the old mark. Over the course of three days and driving through nine states, the couple averaged 84.1 miles per gallon, spending only 4.65 cents per mile. The three-day drive commenced on May 3, 2012 in Houston, TX and ended on May 5, 2012 in Sterling, Virginia. To make the drive as realistic as possible, the couple included 120 pounds of luggage and drove during daylight hours to experience normal traffic situations. Additionally, the couple took turns driving and didn’t travel more than 14 hours per day.

“We’re excited to have broken the record for the longest distance driven on one-tank of fuel,” said John Taylor. “The Passat TDI was the perfect car for the trip. It offers plenty of interior and cargo space, yet is frugal enough to help us achieve this record.”

The Passat’s 2.0-liter TDI Clean Diesel inline four-cylinder engine produces 140 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque and with a manual transmission delivers an EPA estimated fuel economy rating of 43 mpg on the highway. The TDI engine is equipped with a Selective Catalytic Reduction System (SCR) that fulfills emissions requirements in all 50 states. The Passat—built at the world’s only LEED Platinum certified automotive factory in Chattanooga, TN—was named Motor Trend’s 2012 Car of the Year.

“The Passat was engineered and designed to be a comfortable yet fun to drive alternative in the midsize segment. The TDI Clean Diesel version unites driving dynamics and fuel efficiency that isn’t found in the competitive set,” said Rainer Michel, Vice President of Product Strategy, Volkswagen of America, Inc. “We’re honored that the Taylors chose the 2012 Passat TDI as the vehicle to set this outstanding distance record. Their record shows just how economical the Passat TDI can be in the right hands.”

Prior to the drive, the speedometer and odometer were calibrated by a state certified testing station in Houston, Texas. Law enforcement officers from the city of Houston, Texas oversaw validation of mileage, fuel fill-up, and gas tank sealing at the beginning of the drive. A Loudoun County, Virginia Sheriff’s Deputy verified completion of the drive and mileage prior to removing the fuel tank seal.

The Taylors have made a career out of driving efficiently and conducting workshops globally on fuel-efficient driving techniques. They have collected more than 90 world fuel economy and vehicle-related records from drives around the globe.

The 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 is officially in the “11-second” club, as engineers recently turned an 11.93-second/116-mph quarter-mile elapsed time run in a showroom-stock Camaro ZL1 automatic. A Camaro ZL1 manual ran an 11.96-second ET at 117 mph.

Only a few other production vehicles can run the quarter-mile as quickly as the ZL1. Fewer yet can also run 0-60 in 4 seconds, reach a top speed of 184 mph and lap the famous Nürburgring in 7:41.27 – all with the street-legal, factory-issued components and no time-consuming equipment adjustments at the racetrack.

“The ZL1 is great at everything and we’re very proud of that,” said Tony Roma, Camaro ZL1 program engineering manager. “You can take it to the drag strip and run 11-second quarter-miles all day long. You can also take it to a road course, where it’s balanced, handles well, and does exactly what you want – including lapping Virginia International Raceway’s Grand Course in under three minutes – and yet the ZL1 is sophisticated enough to use as a daily driver. It’s a supercar you can drive every day.”

For perspective, the Camaro ZL1 is so quick that some drivers who experiment with “drag radial” tires or full racing slicks may find themselves going too quick for most NHRA-sanctioned racetracks, where a five-point roll bar is required for vehicles running 11.49 or quicker. The 11.93-second ET in a stock ZL1 tested by the engineers wore the factory-issued Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar G:2 tires developed specifically for it, putting the car only a scant 0.44-second away from that additional racing safety requirement.

BMW announced new BMW M Performance Parts specially designed for the new 2012 BWW 3 Series Sedan and 2011-2012 5 Series Sedan. Like the BMW M Performance Parts already available for the high-performance M3, 1 Series M Coupe, X5 M and X6 M, the components developed for 3 Series and 5 Series models ensure an authentic transfer of BMW M-specific motor racing technology to everyday driving.

This new line of accessories provides a distinctive, sporty character to further enhance driving dynamics. BMW M Performance Parts are the result of years of racing expertise and have been developed in close collaboration with BMW M GmbH. Each component goes through an intensive development and manufacturing process which results in uncompromised performance. Exclusive chassis, aerodynamic, cockpit and powertrain components are now available for the 3 Series and 5 Series Sedans.

Chassis: A tangible increase in dynamic performance.

A new 20” forged alloy wheel set (style # 405M) is offered by BMW M Performance for the new for 2012 BMW 3 Series Sedan (F30). These wheels are produced using a special forging process that reduces weight by 1 kg (2.4 lbs.) per wheel when compared to a similar size wheel. This reduction in unsprung mass helps improve steering response and handling characteristics.

A similar 20” BMW M Performance wheel set is also available for the 5 Series. Both wheel sets showcase an exclusive bi-color design (High-gloss turned finish on the front side and Ferric grey paint between the spokes) style featuring the BMW M logo. These wheel/tire combinations are the largest size approved by BMW.

To accent the 20” wheels and to improve braking performance, a Brembo big-brake kit with painted calipers is now available. The upgrade consists of 4-piston aluminum fixed calipers on the front axle and 2-piston aluminum fixed calipers on the rear axle. Improved thermal resistance is provided by the larger, internally-vented, lightweight-construction sports brake discs measuring 370 x 30 mm (diameter x thickness) on the front axle and 345 x 24 mm on the rear axle. These cross-drilled and grooved brake discs also reduce water film build-up between the brake lining and the disc surface during wet driving conditions. Painted caliper colors include M Performance Red, Yellow or Orange, any of which contrast nicely with the 20 inch wheels.

Aerodynamics: Optimized aerodynamic properties, expressive design.

High-gloss black kidney grilles are available to create a sporty, menacing character for the 3 Series and 5 Series Sedan. Drivers of the 3 Series can personalize the exterior of their vehicle even further with BMW M Performance Sport stripes. These stripes are printed on high-quality PVC film and are available in black or white.

BMW M Performance carbon fiber mirror caps are also available. These mirror caps are handmade with attention to detail and are clear-coated to protect them from harmful UV rays. To complement the carbon fiber mirror caps, a carbon fiber rear deck lid spoiler is available for the 5 Series to provide improved vehicle stability and driving dynamics.

Cockpit: High-quality materials, innovative technology, Motorsport design.

For the interior, BMW Performance has concentrated on the driver-machine interface, by creating a new Motorsport-derived steering wheel for the 3 Series Sedan. This direct replacement for the standard steering wheel features a thick, racing-style, flattened lower rim and is fully covered in hand-stitched Alcantara. A red stripe is located at the 12 o’clock position to provide a quick visual indicator of steering wheel position.

BMW M Performance has made available a seven piece carbon fiber and Alcantara interior trim set inspired by the world of Motorsport. The carbon fiber trim pieces are manufactured with a unique “open-pore” finish. This new technology offers the driver direct contact with high-tech carbon fiber materials. In contrast to the high gloss version, the carbon fiber in this instance is sealed with a special silk matte protective lacquer which allows for the structure and texture of the carbon fiber to remain tactile. The Alcantara trim on the dashboard is branded with the M Performance trademark to accentuate the sportiness of the interior.

A BMW M Performance carbon fiber gear shift knob and selector lever is available for vehicles with manual or automatic transmissions. The same open-pore technology used in the interior trim kit can be found on these products as well. The gear shift knob also has an integrated shift boot made of Alcantara.

Exhaust System: Exciting and sporty sound generates a genuine racing feel.

Using state-of-the-art CAD and FEM technology, a stainless steel exhaust system has been developed for the 335i and 535i Sedan (available from June 2012). This new exhaust enhances the sound quality and volume of the hallmark BMW TwinPower Turbo Inline 6-cylinder engine. A unique, high-tech look is provided by two chrome-plated 80 mm exhaust tips which are laser-engraved with the BMW M logo. Exhaust backpressure is reduced and a sporty powerful tone is heard with the BMW M Performance Exhaust System (without the droning noise typically associated with some aftermarket exhaust systems).

Nike Sportswear is launching the ‘What the Max’ Collection in Summer ’12, including the Nike Air Max 90 Hyperfuse, Nike Air Max 95 Hyperfuse and Nike Air Max 2012 Hyperfuse. All three feature Hyperfuse technology in bold neon color pops to highlight the innovation.

The Nike design team first introduced Hyperfuse construction to create a breathable, stable and resilient basketball shoe called the Nike Hyperfuse and the performance technology is brought to life on the past, present and future of Nike Sportswear icon models.

Hyperfuse construction creates a durable composite material composed of three layers; one for stability, one for breathability and the third for durability. All three layers are fused together using heat and pressure to create a level of precision unattainable via traditional cut-and-sew methods.

Performance EcoBoost

The heart of the Focus ST is a reworked EcoBoost® 2.0-liter engine massaged for very sporting throttle input responsiveness, strong off-idle power and a broad torque curve. The engine produces 252 horsepower and 270 lb.-ft. of torque.

“The power delivery has no weak spots, there’s no way to be left flat-footed,” Schoder said. “At the same time, drivers wanting to spin this motor into the upper octaves will be rewarded.”

To enhance the full experience for the driver, Focus ST is equipped with a sound symposer box that enriches the natural sounds of the motor by capturing internal engine oscillations and piping them through the interior under throttle. In part-throttle driving, the car’s power is felt more than heard; under full throttle, the engine music is naturally amplified through the symposer box.

Power, torque and engine notes are even more impressive in the context of its efficiency. Official EPA figures are not yet available, but Schoder said she expects exceptional fuel economy for Focus ST, especially for this class.

World-class chassis technology

The unique sport suspension combines several technologies never before seen. Designed to give drivers enhanced agility on winding roads while still inspiring high-speed confidence, the variable-ratio steering rack makes steering less sensitive on the straightaways but increases sensitivity at the corners. It can also help drivers at slow speeds, like when maneuvering into a tight parking spot.

The electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) on Focus ST is enhanced with torque steer compensation. More aggressive tuning of the torque steer compensation allows drivers to accelerate while still maintaining grip on roads with uneven surfaces. The system detects the torque steer those conditions can create and counteracts the effect to help the driver feel in complete control.

Advancing the state of the sport compact art

Focus ST will offer Recaro sport seats, unique 18-inch Y-spoke ST wheels, dual-zone climate control, Xenon headlights and leather appointments throughout the cabin. Its superior chassis rigidity aids the suspension in providing a firm, but quiet and controlled ride. The instrument cluster features ST-unique sport gauges with red needle pointers to monitor turbo boost, oil pressure and oil temperature levels.

The Chrysler brand announced its return to the China market at the 2012 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition. To commemorate this important occasion, Chrysler unveiled the 300 Ruyi design concept, a vehicle based on the innovative Chrysler 300C sedan and catering to the tastes of Chinese customers.

The ruyi and its significance in Chinese tradition inspired designers in creating the unique concept vehicle especially for China. Ruyi means “as one wishes” and takes the form of a curved decorative object, like a scepter, that symbolizes prosperity. A ruyi is often crafted of precious materials with beautiful design, carrying a promising meaning of abundant good fortune.

“We celebrate our reentry into China with a vehicle that symbolizes an auspicious beginning for the Chrysler brand,” said Saad Chehab, President and Chief Executive Officer – Chrysler Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. “By integrating our distinctive American design and technology with timeless Chinese inspiration, we are looking to attract an emerging set of customers who are driven and dare to be different. We look forward to gathering the reaction of Chinese customers to the Chrysler 300 Ruyi, to surprise them with future models incorporating elements that we can see today in this design concept.”

The Chrysler brand also displayed the 300C sedan and Grand Voyager MPV – the first two models to arrive for sale in China. The Chrysler 300C Luxury Series will be equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission mated with the award-winning 3.6-liter Pentastar® V-6 engine and will begin sales in mid-2012, while the Grand Voyager is planned to follow in the fourth quarter of this year.

Since 1925, the Chrysler brand has delighted customers with daring American design, leading technology, craftsmanship and premium features ever since the first Chrysler vehicle was sold. Now the brand is returning to China with a promise to deliver upon those values, with a proposition that exceeds expectations.

Chrysler 300 Ruyi Design Concept
Cultural cues from the Chinese ruyi were the inspiration behind the Chrysler 300 Ruyi design concept. Looking to enhance the car’s upscale and urban composition, designers started with a Maximum Steel exterior color and added dark chrome to the exterior door handles, grille surround and lower grille tracer.

The premium Chrysler wing badges and headlamps contrast with low side sills, rear fascia and dual exhaust tips, giving the car an elegant yet sporty look.

Final exterior touches include a polished ruyi-inspired signature grille with dark chrome throats, bluish steel-grey tinted glass (to be in harmony with the Maximum Steel body color), a ruyi Chinese character badge on the deck lid and a ghosted speed stripe running along the side character lines.

Probably the most exotic exterior feature, and one that pays direct homage to the ruyi, are the proud 22-inch concept alloy wheels. These ten-spoke wheels feature spokes designed with a curvature reminiscent of a ruyi scepter. The spoke faces are polished with dark chrome pockets, and the Chrysler wing badge is placed on the center caps.

Interior appointments are given many unique finishes like black chrome on the outer dash vents, navigation screen and center dash vent surrounds, gauge rings, steering wheel rim and door handles. Brushed patterned trim is incorporated in the center console, upper door panels and flanking the dashboard. Machined metal accent trim is found surrounding the shift gate, both center console storage areas, upon the door and on the steering wheel spokes.

Highlighting the interior are custom seats with light-tone leather-wrapped seating surfaces with suede center inserts and side bolsters. Contrasting French stitching, black piping and a ruyi-inspired cloud form (embossed onto the seat backs) complement the sophisticated interior appointments.

The Chrysler 300 Ruyi concept is equipped with the “Engine of the Year” 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission driving the rear wheels.

A traditional ruyi has a long S-shaped handle and a head fashioned like a cloud. Ruyi symbolize authority, prosperity and good luck in Chinese tradition, and they date back to the Han Dynasty in the first century AD, especially flourishing during the Qing Dynasty (starting in the 17th century) when they became highly valued gifts. Ruyi are often associated with cloud motifs and can be found in art and architecture, appearing in knot and rug patterns, sculpture, paintings and even modern corporate logos.

Chrysler 300C for 2012
Integrating the first eight-speed automatic transmission in a U.S. luxury sedan, the 2012 Chrysler 300C sedan offers world-class technological innovation, craftsmanship and quality while delivering stylistic distinction, fuel efficiency and premium E-segment sedan features at a legendary value.

Arriving to China will be the Chrysler 300C Luxury Series, designed to be the most luxurious and fuel-efficient Chrysler flagship sedan ever. Exclusive interior features include ultra-premium leather and hand-sanded matte wood trim, power-adjustable front seats, and ventilated and heated front and rear seats.

On the exterior, large polished-face aluminum wheels and platinum-chrome accents give the Chrysler 300C Luxury Series an upscale look. Premium amenities include the segment’s largest touchscreen infotainment system and many more state-of-the-art amenities and connectivity features.

The Chrysler 300C Luxury Series features the ZF 8HP45 eight-speed automatic transmission paired with the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine for better power, performance, refinement and fuel efficiency.

The Chrysler 300C is available with more than 60 safety and security features and recently earned the highest five-star safety rating from the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration for front driver and overall vehicle scores. In addition, the Chrysler flagship sedan was named a “Top Safety Pick” by the U.S. Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The Chrysler brand was named the “Most Ideal Popular Brand” in AutoPacific’s 2011 Ideal Vehicle Awards, based on U.S. owners’ ratings of their 2011 cars and trucks.

The Jeep® brand introduced the Jeep Wrangler “Dragon” design concept at the 2012 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition. The concept integrates two icons together in one: the Wrangler, as the off-road icon of the Jeep brand, and the honored Chinese dragon. Belief holds that both possess incredible capabilities, making them a perfect combination.

According to the Chinese Zodiac, this is the Year of the Dragon, which is held with high regard in Chinese culture. The dragon symbolizes strength and power and is an aspirational character normally associated with royalty and good fortune. It was these characteristics that inspired the upscale design of the Jeep Wrangler Dragon concept.

“The Jeep brand is committed to China and therefore we must design and tailor our vehicles to the specific tastes and preferences of Chinese consumers,” said Mike Manley, Chief Operating Officer for Asia and President and CEO – Jeep Brand, Chrysler Group LLC. “The Wrangler Dragon design concept is the first Jeep vehicle designed specifically with Chinese elements in mind and showcases the opportunity for special editions that might be available for China in the near future.”

Jeep Wrangler Dragon Design Concept
The Jeep Wrangler Dragon design concept is based on a China-market Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon painted black with a black body-color three-piece hard top. From there, the designers incorporated numerous bronze-gold details – a color associated with the dragon. These bronze-gold details can be found inside the front grille slats, headlamp surrounds and Jeep badging front and rear.

The unique 18-inch five-spoke alloy wheels are matte black with a bronze-gold high-gloss outer edge and feature 35-inch off-road tires. Other bronze-gold touches include a pad-printed engine cover, bolts for the fuel-filler door and the taillamp assembly, a Chinese dragon character side badge and wheel center caps.

The exterior also has black highlights such as painted fenders, a gloss-black applique on the front bumper, and a tone-on-tone dragon decal that starts on the hood and runs down the driver’s side of the vehicle. There is also a dragon motif on a unique carbon-fiber insulator mounted under the hood and on the gloss-black spare tire cover. Final exterior touches include a Mopar® fuel-filler door and a black-finish LED exterior lighting package that features aftermarket projector headlamps, fog lamps, turn lamps and taillamps.

Moving to the interior, the black and bronze-gold theme continues with black leather seating surfaces with bronze-gold accent piping and stitching. Magic Wand metallic leather is on the side bolsters and the sides of the head restraints, while a laser-etched dragon pattern is on the face of the head restraints. Dragon-scale patterned bronze-gold leather covers the outside edges of the seats and front center arm rest.

Other interior touches include high-gloss piano black instrument panel bezels, bronze-gold accent trim on the steering wheel spokes, instrument cluster, passenger-side dashboard grab handle and door handles, and gold accent stitching on the leather-wrapped door bolsters. Finishing the interior modifications are dragon tags on the front and rear floor mats.

Chinese dragons symbolize potent and auspicious powers, particularly control over water, rain and winds and their more severe weather phenomena. Dragons are symbols of the natural world, adaptability and transformation – divine creatures capable of doing anything.

While debuting as a design concept at the Beijing International Automotive Exhibition, the Jeep Wrangler Dragon could become a production model if demand is great enough.

The all-new supercharged 5.8-liter powerplant in the 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 has been officially SAE-certified as the most powerful series production V8 in the world with peak output of 662 horsepower and 631 lb.-ft. of torque. That’s more power and torque than low volume sports cars costing tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars more than the GT500, which is the most fuel-efficient vehicle in its segment. In fact the 2013 GT500 is the most fuel-efficient car with over 550 horsepower in any segment available in America.

Unlike high-strung engines found in much more expensive exotic supercars, the GT500 engine generates its massive thrust throughout its operating range with 395 lb.-ft. of torque available just off idle at 1,000 rpm. More than 90 percent of the peak torque is available from 2,200 to 5,800 rpm so that no matter when you squeeze the go pedal, the GT500 will just get up and run.

The combination of the new TVS 2.3-liter supercharger, twin overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder ensures this stallion can breathe all the way to 7,000 rpm with the peak power production coming at 6,500 rpm and holding fairly steady right to the rev limit.

“Our goal is to create outstanding all-around performance cars, not just stoplight-to-stoplight sprinters,” said Jamal Hameedi, SVT chief engineer. “We’ve backed up this amazing powerplant with a more refined chassis tuning that helps keep the rubber on the pavement without punishing the driver’s spine and six-pot Brembo brakes that dissipate speed with ease stop after stop.”

The broad, flat torque curve of the GT500 engine makes it tractable and easy to drive whether trolling along in traffic or powering out of a turn on a twisting country road. With more than enough grunt to push the coupe to 200 mph and beyond, the chassis has been tuned to absorb the road imperfections that can cause instability at high speeds. The revised front fascia and splitter help manage the flow of air around and under the GT500 so that it offers 33 percent more effective aero loading at 160 mph compared to the 2011 model and feels more firmly planted.

“The engineers at Ford SVT focused on the fundamentals first with solid mechanical grip and strong brakes,” added Hameedi. “On top of that platform they added advanced driver-adjustable electronic assist features including launch control, Bilstein adjustable damping, AdvanceTrac stability control and electric power-assisted steering.”

Even with the most powerful production V8 in the world, the 2013 Shelby GT500 improves on the fuel efficiency of the 2012 model with an EPA-estimated 15 mpg city, 24 mpg highway and 18 mpg combined with no gas guzzler tax. That’s 5 mpg better on the highway than the 2012 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 even with an extra 82 horsepower and 75 lb.-ft. being generated under the hood. With the 2013 GT500 world-class performance no longer has to mean a world-class thirst for fuel.

Shingo Saito was the overall winner during the 1st round of the 14 scheduled for D1GP Japan. The 1st round titled 'Tokyo Drift' took place last weekend in Odaiba, Tokyo. Over 8,500 spectators battled the cold rain to watch their favorite drivers hit the track over the 2-day event.

The four-door coupé is a rebel when it comes to style: nonconformist, provocative and masculine. Technical highlights include its striking headlamp design featuring innovative indicators, the new four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine with 155 kW (211 hp) and the all-wheel drive system 4MATIC.

"We are staking our claim very clearly here. This is the model against which sporty vehicles in the executive segment will have to measure themselves in future."

"Its breathtaking proportions, sinewy fluid surfaces and sculptural lines are the physical expression of our dynamic design idiom."

Following a brief appearance at the Avant/Garde Diaries event in Los Angeles (20 April to 6 May 2012), the Mercedes-Benz Concept Style Coupé (length/width/height: 4637/1891/1398 mm) will be celebrating its official world premiere at Auto China in Beijing (23 April to 2 May 2012).

Provocative and masculine: the exterior

Its breathtakingly sporty proportions and powerfully dynamic design idiom, featuring the interplay between concave and convex surfaces that is so typical for Mercedes, give this four-door coupé its unmistakable look.

Among its most striking features are the way the bonnet with its powerdomes is set right into the front end assembly, as well as its diamond-look grille, which follows through on design cues set by the Concept A-CLASS. The paint finish of the concept vehicle is in Alubeam – a colour that helps to emphasise the sculptural quality of its lines.

The innovative headlamps of the Concept Style Coupé are reminiscent of the ever wary, almost intimidating eyes of a predatory animal. In standby mode they shine red. The indicatorsare another special feature: when they are activated, the individual elements light up one after another in a "Mexican wave" effect.

Three prominent lines give structure to the vehicle when viewed from the side: the front structural edge over the wings flows towards the rear end in a characteristic dropping line. Another, more sinewy line spans the shoulder muscle above the rear axle, while the third line extends upward in a sweeping curve from the front wheel towards the rear. Together, these lines lend more depth and dynamism to the side profile. The ripple design of the prominent exterior mirrors takes advantage of the design freedoms enjoyed by a concept car.

The same is true of the 20-inch wheels, with their very sporty turbine design. Perforated pins on the spokes pick up once again on the diamond-theme of the radiator grille. The Concept Style Coupé features frameless side windows and has no B-pillar.

A large panoramic roof creates a light and airy interior. A metal rib, the shape of which evokes a roll-over bar, separates the roof from the rear windscreen, which in turn flows down to merge smoothly into the tail end. The avantgarde lines of the Coupé are further emphasised by the way the tail lights, with their metallic-red colouring, taper to a sharp point both to the front and toward the rear centre. An integrated dual-flow exhaust system underlines the car's sporty credentials and gives added width to the tail end. A narrow rear diffuser picks up again on the dotted pattern of the diamond grille.

High-grade sportiness: the interior

The interior opens up to reveal taut, expressively sculptured surfaces. A large carbon-fibre trim panel spans its full width, giving it the elegance and distinctively ‘cool’ appeal of a coupé. Standing proud from the instrument cluster are the two tubes, also in carbon fibre and individually glazed. When the indicator is activated, a ring lights up in the tubes.

Flowing back in a long, continuous wave from the instrument panel is the centre console. Embedded in this is an intricately designed fan module for the two rear seats, which also incorporates a stowage compartment.

The world of fashion provided the inspiration for the colour mix of light grey and anthracite. A fresh, sporty touch is added by neon green piping and topstitching, which appear on the instrument panel, steering wheel, seat
and door centre panels, amongst other places.

Fine materials combine with high-grade workmanship to set a new benchmark for quality. There has been no stinting on the use of leather, either: the instrument panel is upholstered in white nubuck leather, providing an interesting contrast with the anthracite-coloured Alcantara®used on the upper section of the instrument panel. Suede is used on the sports steering wheel to ensure better grip. All chrome trim elements and control panels now for the first time feature a black anodised finish, as seen on top-of-the-range limited Sports Edition chronograph watches. The surfaces around the HMI control panel have the glossy shimmer of black anodised aluminium.

The four integral seats with integrated head restraints are already familiar from the Sports version of the new A-Class. An electroplated insert in the upper part of the seat adds to the impression of lightness and is illuminated.

The design of the air vents in the instrument panel evokes an aircraft jet engine. As in the Concept A-CLASS they are backlit and change colour according to the temperature set by the occupants for the climate control system. When cool, fresh air is being brought into the car, they are blue, but they light up red when the airflow is warm. At a mid-range temperature setting the vents are illuminated in fluorescent yellow, and thus match the colour of the piping perfectly.

"Always on", even in the car: the multimedia system

With COMAND Online and the various Mercedes-Benz apps developed specifically to be used and controlled while on the move, as well as with the ability to browse the internet when the vehicle is stationary, the occupants of the Concept Style Coupé are "always on" and able to maintain their digital lifestyle at all times.

Mercedes-Benz is firmly convinced that the future lies with cloud computing. The software for the COMAND Online applications is not stored in the vehicle, but runs off the Daimler Vehicle Backend. The advantage is that the system can be updated with new applications "over-the-air" (OTA) through a mobile phone connection, without the car having to be taken into the workshop. The software is thus always up to date, irrespective of the development cycles of either the vehicles or the consumer electronic devices.

Sportiness in tune with the times: the engine

Sporty driving dynamics coupled with exemplary efficiency are the hallmarks of the engine of the Concept Style Coupé. Powerful wheel-hub drive is provided by the 2.0-litre version of the new petrol engine generation with 155 kW (211 hp), combined here with the efficient 4MATIC all-wheel drive system and the 7G-DCT dual clutch automatic transmission.

Among the highlights of the four-cylinder engine are its direct-injection system with exhaust gas turbocharging, an enhanced combustion system and extended stratification ranges for lean-burn operation using fast-acting injectors for the multiple fuel injections, and multi-spark ignition according to need.

Every new AMG high-performance vehicle offers an outstanding mix of “more power from less fuel” – and the G 63 AMG is no exception. The “strong man” in the AMG model range has been further enhanced with the state-of-the-art powertrain of the new ML 63 AMG. The design has been comprehensively reworked, so that, for the first time in the 33-year history of the G-Class, AMG customers can enjoy a raft of future-oriented systems: spray-controlled petrol direct injection, the ECO start/stop function and generator management. The AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine develops a maximum output of 400 kW (544 hp) and a torque of 760 newton metres. This enables the new G 63 AMG to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds, with a new top speed of 210 km/h (electronically limited).

The new G 63 AMG outperforms the G 55 AMG KOMPRESSOR by 27 kW (37 hp) and 60 newton metres. Its direct predecessor was a clear favourite for G-Class purchasers, with a sales ratio of over 40 percent.

AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC and ECO start/stop function

The vehicle’s driving performance features are matched by its impressive advances in the area of fuel economy. The fuel consumption of 13.8 litres per 100 kilometres (NEDC combined) is a reduction of 2.1 litres on the predecessor model, representing fuel savings of 13 percent. This reduction can be attributed to the state-of-the-art biturbo eight-cylinder engine, along with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission system, the generator management system and the ECO start/stop function. The seven-speed automatic gearbox features three drive modes and an automatic double-declutching function for downshifting, creating an incredible range of variability. In “Controlled Efficiency” (C) mode, the ECO start/stop function is active, shutting down the eight-cylinder engine when the vehicle is stationary. “C” mode is also characterised by smooth accelerator and transmission characteristics and early gear changes; the vehicle is usually started in second gear in this mode. The AMG instrument cluster includes a green “ECO” symbol, indicating when the ECO start/stop function is on.

In the Sport (S) and Manual (M) modes, the ECO start/stop function is off, and the engine-transmission combination displays far greater agility. Short, precisely defined ignition and injection retardations mean shorter shift times when changing up at full load. The efficiency of the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission system is further enhanced with a new fuel economy converter with centrifugal pendulum, friction-reducing bearing and transmission oil thermal management.

The fascination of the characteristic sound of a V8 AMG

A glance at the AMG sports exhaust system will reassure any doubters that all these efficiency advances have not been at the expense of emotional appeal. The twin tailpipes on both sides at the rear put out the hallmark AMG eight-cylinder sound that means so much to the vehicle’s many admirers. The latest catalytic converter technology is used to ensure that the G 63 AMG meets both the EU 5 exhaust emissions standard and the requirements for the US market (LEV-II standard, on-board diagnosis II and lambda probe diagnosis).

New chassis settings, optimised acoustic comfort

The suspension/damper settings in the AMG Sports chassis have been adjusted for the more dynamic handling characteristics of the new model. To reduce vibration and noise impacts, the design engineers at Mercedes-AMG have also implemented a wide range of NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) measures. Optimised bearings for the automatic gearbox, transfer case and engine cut vibration and noise levels. All this ensures a more comfortable ride and helps to keep the driver fit and alert, particularly over long distances.

The wheels and brakes are also completely new. The G 63 AMG runs on new AMG 5x2 spoke light alloy wheels as standard equipment. The 9.5 x 20 titanium-grey-painted wheels with high-sheen finish are fitted with 275/50 R 20 tyres. As an exclusive special equipment option, the vehicle can be fitted with matt-black-painted AMG light alloy wheels with high-sheen rim flanges. The new AMG high-performance brakes deliver top performance in terms of deceleration, adjustable feed and endurance. All-round ventilated, perforated brake discs with dimensions of 375 x 36 millimetres at the front and 330 x 20 millimetres at the rear provide optimum thermal capability and outstanding deceleration values. The front axle is fitted with a six-piston fixed-calliper brake system taken from the ML 63 AMG, with a single-piston floating-calliper system on the rear axle. The brake callipers are painted red around the entire circumference, and are also available in silver.

Fully readjusted ESP® for with more comfort functions

The new generation of the G-Class also offers a range of exemplary safety features. For example, the luxury off-roader has a completely readjusted ESP®, with automatic control systems including the start-up assist and a HOLD function, both for easier hill starts. And in an emergency braking situation, when the driver suddenly releases the accelerator and hits the brake pedal, the brake system increases the pressure in the brake lines and applies the brake linings to the discs. This ensures maximum effect as soon as the brake is applied. This “pre-filling” function supports the brake assist fitted as standard.

For customers ordering the optional trailer coupling, the ESP® trailer stabilisation feature provides increased safety when the vehicle is pulling a trailer. This additional ESP® function detects the trailer as soon as the electric connector plug is inserted in the socket on the towing vehicle. The ESP® trailer stabilisation system uses the sensors of the ESP®, counteracting any fishtailing of the trailer at speeds higher than 65 km/h by alternating brake application to the left and right front wheels. This is generally sufficient to eliminate the problem and prevent any further risk. In very severe fishtailing situations, the engine torque is also reduced and the towing vehicle is braked on all four wheels, to get the vehicle back to within a safe speed range as quickly as possible.

Characteristic AMG styling with the new face of the brand

The appearance of the eight-cylinder top-of-the-range model is also definitely up with the times. Following the example of the SL 63 AMG and SL 65 AMG, the G 63 AMG has also taken on the new face of the AMG brand. The high-gloss black “twin-blade” radiator grille with four chrome inserts makes the new G-Class model instantly recognisable as an AMG. The grille design is consistent with the car’s classic contours, with an off-road look perfectly integrated into the vehicle’s overall appearance.

Another completely new feature is the AMG bumper, with three generously dimensioned openings as airflow inlets for the cooling module. Vertical high-gloss chrome stainless steel inserts create a distinctively masculine look for the G 63 AMG. New LED daytime running lamps are fitted below the bi-xenon headlamps. As before, only the AMG model has the characteristic wheel-arch flares, stainless-steel running boards and side protective strips with stainless-steel inserts. Other distinctive features include the “V8 BITURBO” logo on the front mudguard and G 63 AMG type plate on the rear door.

Stylish new-look interior with increased comfort

The interior features even more innovations in comparison with the predecessor model. Along with the facelift changes provided as standard, including the new instrument panel and state-of-the-art infotainment and assist systems, the G 63 AMG has an AMG instrument cluster with colour TFT screen, AMG main menu and separate gear display, plus white-lit AMG sills on all doors. The classy E-SELECT shift lever with the distinctive AMG medallion is a familiar feature from other models such as the SLS AMG. An exclusive on-board environment is created by the designo leather upholstery with ruffled leather door panelling. Options available for an even more stylish interior comprise the AMG carbon trim and the designo Exclusive package.

Exclusive twelve-cylinder performance: the new G 65 AMG

Even more exclusive, and also the world’s most powerful production off-road vehicle, is the new G 65 AMG. With maximum output of 450 kW (612 hp) and maximum torque of 1000 newton metres, the top-of-the-range V12 model delights the connoisseur with its incomparably dynamic handling characteristics. The G 65 AMG accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just 5.3 seconds, and has a top speed of 230 km/h (electronically limited). This is the first G-Class vehicle to be equipped with the AMG 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine, which features new exhaust turbochargers with increased spiral cross-section, flow-optimised wastegate channels, multi-spark ignition with twelve double-ignition coils and a higher-power engine control unit. The result is enhanced combustion, leading to smoother running and power delivery. The high-quality carbon and aluminium engine cover adds a final visual touch to this extensive package of new features. As in the G 63 AMG, the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G‑TRONIC automatic transmissionsystem is responsible for power transmission to all four wheels.

In terms of appearance, the G 65 AMG is differentiated from its V8 sister model by the high-gloss chrome radiator grille, the 9.5 x 20 AMG five-spoke light alloy wheels, painted titanium grey with high-sheen finish, its 275/50 R 20 tyres and the V12 BITURBO logo on the mudguards. Interior features include the welcome display with exclusive AMG V12 BITURBO animation, the designo leather exclusive upholstery and the leather instrument panel trim. A unique special touch is the distinctively V12 diamond design of the seats, including the impressed AMG medallion on the headrests. This distinctive upholstery feature is repeated on the door central panels. A comprehensive range of standard equipment includes black piano lacquer designo trim features and designo foot mats with a V12 badge. An exclusive special option from the AMG Performance Studio is AMG light alloy wheels, painted matt black with high-sheen rim flanges.
