Scion’s high performance compact rear-wheel drive sports car will be available for sale this spring at a remarkably affordable Canadian manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $25,990. When equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission that features paddle shifters and rev-match technology the MSRP is $27,170.

Pure Balance

The FR-S, which stands for Front-engine, Rear-wheel drive, Sport; is Scion’s definition of an authentic rear-wheel-drive sports car with exceptionally balanced performance and handling, compelling style, flexible utility and surprising fuel efficiency.

The FR-S is a true “scion,” born into a lengthy history of Toyota performance cars and motorsports. During planning and development, it was most inspired by the AE86 generation of the Corolla, better known as the Hachi-Roku, meaning “8-6” in Japanese. The AE86 was a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive coupe that was lightweight and well balanced, making it a solid choice for driving enthusiasts.

Inspired by the AE86, the FR-S is designed around the core goal of achieving “Pure Balance.” The balance begins with the strategic use of the world’s only flat boxer engine in a front-engine, rear-wheel drive configuration. The engine’s compact size and flat shape allow it to be mounted mid-ship and extremely low, giving the car a dynamically favourable front-to-rear weight ratio of 53:47 and a low centre of gravity comparable to some exotic supercars.

The FR-S’s 2.0-litre, naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine is the result of a joint development between Toyota and Subaru. The partnership begins by combining Subaru’s newly developed, horizontally opposed engine and Toyota’s cutting edge D-4S injection system that incorporates both direct and port injection. The D-4S system, partnered with a high 12.5:1 compression ratio, results in an impressive 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque.

The flat-four mates with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. The manual offers quick, precise shifts with a short-throw; while the automatic features aggressive up shifts and sporty rev-matched down shifts that are initiated by steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Power is transferred to the pavement via a standard Torsen® limited-slip differential.

The idea of “Pure Balance” is further realized by the FR-S lightweight design and compact size. The combination allows the car to be quick and nimble into and out of corners, with dynamic manoeuvrability and confident handling. The coupe’s weight is kept to a minimum by utilizing a lightweight aluminum hood, a solid roof, and by featuring a trunk design instead of a hatchback.

The FR-S low weight is matched with a dynamically tuned suspension setup consisting of MacPherson struts up front and a double wishbone system in the rear. Lightweight 17-inch alloy wheels and ventilated disc brakes are standard on all four corners.

Powerful Exterior Design

The fierce exterior of the FR-S is a solid reflection of its inner power. The profile, inspired by the Toyota 2000GT, reveals a hood and roof-line that is remarkably sleek and low, giving it an aerodynamic shape that channels air cleanly over to the top. The low stance continues to exaggerate the coupe’s menacing face, which is made up of sharp lines, a wide mouth and angular headlights that house the projector-beam halogen lamps. The aggressive front fenders protrude upward and boast the iconic ‘86’ piston emblem, which highlights the car’s AE86 heritage as well as its unique new boxer engine. The rear fascia sits low and wide, with aerodynamic lower treatments that surround the sporty dual exhaust system. LEDs illuminate the edgy taillights, while centre-mounted backup lights finish the muscular design.

The FR-S will be available in seven colours including Raven, Asphalt, Hot Lava, Argento, Ultramarine, Firestorm and Whiteout.

Performance-focused Interior

The FR-S’s interior includes a 4 person seating configuration that is designed with both form and function in mind. The front seats feature deep bolsters and are mounted extremely low and are comfortable yet assertive, while the rear seat folds down flat, creating flexible space. The large centre-mounted tachometer is the focus of the three-gauge cluster and features a programmable shift-indicator, informing the driver of the engine’s vitals. Speed is monitored by both digital and analog gauges. The FR-S features a sporty leather-trimmed steering wheel that has both tilt and telescopic adjustment.

The FR-S will come standard with an eight-speaker AM/FM/CD/USB/MP3 160-watt maximum output Pioneer™ audio system and an Auxiliary Input Jack. Standard features also include Bluetooth® connectivity that allows both hands-free phone connection as well as streaming audio capability.

Sports Car Performance with Excellent Safety Features

FR-S comes standard with six airbags, including dual-stage advanced driver- and front-passenger airbags, front-seat-mounted side airbags and side-curtain airbags.

Like all Scions, FR-S features the Star Safety System that includes Traction Control (TRAC), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Enhanced Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Brake Assist (BA), an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), and Smart Stop Technology (SST).

Toyota Canada Inc. announced today that an all-new North American-designed sedan will make its debut at the 2012 New York International Auto Show. This global premiere will take place in the Galleria room within the Jacob Javits Center at 10:30 a.m. EDT on April 5, 2012.

The sedan’s exciting new design features an elegant yet athletic look.

Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) unveiled the "FT-Bh"1, a lightweight, next generation small gasoline-electric hybrid concept car, here today at the 82nd Geneva International Motor Show2.

TMC, expecting hybrid vehicle use to become widespread in the second half of the 2010s, developed the FT-Bh as a B-segment, ultra fuel-efficient concept car under the theme of "ecomotion" (eco + emotion). In addition to high environmental performance, the FT-Bh aims to provide an enjoyable driving experience through highly responsive and nimble operability.

By pursuing weight reduction, a more-efficient powertrain and reduced air resistance, the FT-Bh boasts a fuel efficiency of 2.1 liters per 100 kilometers under the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), with CO2 emissions of just 49 g/km—less than half the current average for B-segment cars.

Adopting a small fuel tank placed under the rear seat together with the hybrid system's lithium-ion battery gives the vehicle a low center of gravity, thus contributing to improved driving performance, which is the basic appeal of any car.

In addition to the FT-Bh on display, TMC has conceived two alternative versions: a compressed natural gas (CNG) hybrid version with CO2 emissions of 38 g/km and a plug-in hybrid version with CO2 emissions of just 19 g/km.

Power and performance

The 2013 Lexus GS 350 is built around a finely-tuned, proven 3.5 L V6 that generates a peak 306 horsepower and up to 277 lb-ft of torque. Engine systems – including Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (Dual VVT-i), Electronic Throttle Control System with intelligence (ETCS-i), an Acoustic Control Induction System (ACIS) and Electronic Fuel Injection maximize power and efficiency while minimizing emissions.

This engine is mated with a six-speed Electronically Controlled Transmission with intelligence (ECT-i) featuring sequential shift mode and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters for quick, smooth acceleration, lightning-quick shifts, and a downshift throttle-blip function for enhanced engine control. The GS 350 achieves a combined city/highway fuel efficiency of 9.1 L / 100 KM in rear wheel drive models, and 9.5 L / 100 KM in all wheel drive models.

The 2013 Lexus GS 450h features the proven Lexus Hybrid Drive. Built around the 3.5 L V6 engine found in the GS 350, the GS hybrid includes high-torque electric motors/generators, a powerful hybrid system storage battery and a sophisticated power management system. This system confers the ability to operate in multiple modes – Normal, Sport, Sport +, Eco and electric-only EV – and delivers a peak 338 horsepower. Coupled to a continuously variable transmission, the GS 450h’s hybrid drive delivers performance and efficiency without compromised: acceleration on par with that of a 4.5 L V8 engine, coupled to sophisticated environmental performance and class- leading fuel efficiency of just 6.4 L / 100 KM city/highway combined.

Handling and Control

All 2013 GS performance luxury sedans feature a redesigned chassis and performance-tuned suspension system. The front independent suspension features anti-dive and anti-squat geometry, plus forged aluminum alloy upper and lower arms and aluminum alloy steering knuckles to help reduce un-sprung weight and increase rigidity. The rear multi-link suspension features forged aluminum alloy upper arms and toe-control arms to help reduce weight while enhancing responsiveness and stability. These systems work together to deliver highly responsive handling, exceptional stability and first-rate ride quality.

In addition, the GS 450h features the Lexus Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS), fitted front and rear as standard. This system (which is also available on certain GS 350 models), controls damping force on all four wheels in response to driver operations and road surface conditions. This helps achieve high measures of both ride comfort and handling stability. In addition, computerized sensors monitor steering and wheel speed to minimize dive, squat, lean and roll. On the GS 450h as well as GS 350 models so equipped, AVS settings are modified when the driver selects the SPORT S+ mode to further enhance handling and performance.

The 2013 GS features the Lexus Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management system. VDIM is designed to anticipate and help correct potential instability for optimized control and handling. VDIM uses information from computer-linked sensors to detect a skid or slide and takes corrective action through subtle adjustments to steering, braking and throttle control, as appropriate.

All models feature highly responsive and efficient electric power steering. In addition, the GS 350 RWD with F-Sport package features Lexus Dynamic Handling (LDH). This combines variable gear ratio steering with Dynamic Rear Steering to boost performance on curves that call for greater control and confidence.

The GS 350 AWD adds the confidence of advanced all-wheel-drive. Under normal driving conditions, this system distributes 70% of power to the rear wheels and 30% to the front wheels. When slippage occurs, the system transfers power to achieve best traction, with up to 50% being transferred to the front wheels. The system consists of front, rear and centre differentials and uses Lexus Traction Control (TRAC) instead of a limited slip centre differential to create a system that delivers high levels of stability and drivability.

GS gas models feature Hill-start Assist Control (HAC), which prevents roll-back when starting on a grade.

From its impact absorbing structure to advanced active and passive safety systems, every 2013 Lexus GS series sedan is engineered to help prevent accidents, and to protect occupants if an incident occurs, offering peace of mind to drivers and passengers:

You may have spotted Dan's GS throughout the many random picture posts on the internet but for IntunedOnline it was a great chance for us to catch up with Dan as he's been either envied or hated for years depending on your perspective.

As one of the original members of Team 'LowLife' in Montreal he has owned and customized more cars then even I can remember, his cars have been featured on local forums and other digital magazines around the world. One thing we know for sure is that Dan is definitely an innovator when it comes to style and setting the bar.

The GS AWD Project started off as budget build replacement for his Porsche 997 which was sold and re-invested in a house. Like many of his cars, this project expanded from the original plan and came together perfectly. Living the low life, Dan bagged the GS on using UAS Bags and Megan Coilovers. The system is run by 2 manual switches inside the car and powered by 2 pumps in the trunk. Megan upper and lower control arms were also used to allow for necessary adjustments to have the car slammed properly.

The exterior was kept fresh with a Carson body kit and fully rolled fenders, to accommodate the wheel setup the rear quarters were widened 1.5" per side. Having an excellent taste in wheels, Dan chose a set of Rotiform BLQ 3-piece in gold with fully polished lips (20x9.5 and 20x10.5). This Lexus GS is simply one of the cleanest we've seen and we can't wait to see which car he builds next.

The Washington Auto Show is the starting point of the automotive year in the D.C. area. The event was held at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center between January 27th and February 5th giving spectators a chance to see everything new in the industry.

Fans were treated to a variety of cars including the Ford EVOS Concept, the New Subaru BRZ and a series of exotics from Lamborghini and Ferrari. FIAT appeared to continue their popularity in D.C. with their largely Gucci influenced booth. Aside from the Ford EVOS, other concepts at the show included the Toyota FCV-R and Lexus LF-LC.

Althought the Washington Auto Show is done for 2012, fans are already anticipating what 2013 will bring.

A tremendous challenge for any car builder will always be the ground up restoration and although it can be a daunting task a builders passion will push them through to completion and the reward can be un-measurable. This is where our feature car begins, we wanted to introduce you to 'Artee' a 1979 Toyota Corona RT130 which was kept from becoming scrap metal and turned in to a work of art on wheels.

'Artee' was to originally be a Corona Wagon but since the owner could not find one the Sedan would have to make due. The goal of the restoration was to make a clean stand out car which would separate it from the other restored Corona's. This build kicked off with a complete tear down of the car before starting the process of preparing the body; everything from the interior, chassis, windows and engine were all removed to ensure nothing was in the way for the first stages of bodywork.

The exterior was completely worked over from the engine bay to the tail lights and everywhere in between. A Toyota moon roof was added to the Corona to give it a more modern appearance. As the project progressed it began to take the form of a car again as each piece was re-installed on the vehicle. The original 12R engine also received a rebuild before being bolted down in the engine bay once again.

The interior was re-upholstered in a custom pattern that suited the build, a customized fiberglass steering wheel was also added as the icing on the cake. After trying out different sets of wheels 'Artee' received a set of RIAL Wheels 17x8.5 all around color matched to the vehicle. Although hard to believe the '79 Corona is sitting on stock springs and shocks.

This build is truly inspirational and if there's one thing anyone should take away from this is that next time you're at an event, meet or show. When you see a car that's been built or modified bumper to bumper, take a second and think about the hours and effort put in to that job even if it's not your style and remember to show some respect.

The Canadian auto show circuit kicked off in Montreal with the 44th Edition of the Montreal International Auto Show. As like previous years the MIAS hosted manufacturers from around the world to showcase the latest and greatest in the automotive industry. The 10 day show gave over 205,000 spectators a chance to check out all the new cars under one roof and even peek at some vehicles of their dreams and the future.

A few of the unveilings that stood out for us were the Canadian debut of the Subaru BRZ which attracted a fair share of the crowd. Hyundai had a surprisingly large booth and introduced the face lifted Genesis Coupe along with the new Veloster turbo. Ford had a dynamic and interactive singing robot in their booth while they showcased their full line-up including the 2013 Mustang, Escape and Focus ST.

FIAT had one of the most popular booths featuring the 500 and 500 Gucci edition, they also had the Montreal premiere of the Abarth 500. Honda's booth was nice but lacked impact as the key attention grabbers were a base model CR-Z and the PASMAG Remix 2.0 HFP Turbo Civic and Supercharged Accord; Same deal at their sibling Acura's booth where the highlight was the 2012 TSX SE and the 2013 RDX Prototype.

Mazda's SKYACTIV technology played a big part at the show and in their line-up as they unveiled the all new CX-5. Scion showed off their limited edition release series vehicles including the tC, xB and xD. Mercedes-Benz callouts were the AMG versions of the SLK55 and the CL63 Black Series tucked away deep in their booth. There were also a fair share of exotics from Maserati, Lamborghini and Ferrari which featured the all new FF.

MIAS also offered other spectator attractions such as the Legends of the Road exhibit which hosted a series of classic Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Maserati and a couple of muscle cars along with the always appealing Carrera GT. Last but not least was the Performance Zone located on the 7th floor. The Performance Zone sponsored by Scion hosted over 40 modified vehicles to satisfy anyone's taste. Cars ranged from fully built drift and drag machines to some of the stop street cars in Quebec. As a special attraction in the Performance Zone a Bugatti Veyron was added as the ultimate performance vehicle but after some testing in Forza 4 we have a different opinion. Last but not least Intuned Online was on site during the entire show as our Project 370Z and Mugen Civic were both chosen for the Auto Show and seemed very popular with the spectators in attendance.

When we first came across this project, it was simply another ambitious project with a full engine rebuild. Not that this type of work is easy, but it was nothing to write home about. Literally. But as time went on, it was clear his venture was not from the realm of the ordinary. Supercharged 1UZ.
Nothing else really need to be said. What’s a VIP car without some decent power under the bonnet?

James was able to give this symbolic chassis a second chance at life. The engine has been fully massaged from the ground up from a donor car with brand new wiring and parts Valve adjustments, new valve seals, the engine has been spruced back to its former glory. With meticulous attention, James then started sourcing his parts from halfway across the globe, thanks to BulletCars who’s shipped his entire M90 supercharger kit straight from Australia. They were able to put together a comprehensive package for this uncommon chassis.
We don’t have any exact figures on the output, but James assures us that it can keep up with the latest generation Lexus cars; quite a feat for a 20 year old + model.

Another detail that caught our attention was his choice with the Wings West kit for the LS400; talk about going with a different route. With the VIP scene on the rise, Junction Produce, Wald and other VIP brands were pretty much standard. When asked, he simply told us that he thought the lines flow better with the car (although he did consider the JP kit). Draped in Onyx black, the luxo-cruiser sits lower thanks to Megan LP coilover system along with an air system by UAS, and the interior was tastefully redone in Gucci fabric. Finally, VIP modular was chosen to complete his LS400 with its VR01, properly fitted.

Like most projects, it starts off with a plan and a budget. But once you get caught up in the project, the budget soon becomes a distant secondary objective and the wallet gets lighter by the day. Thus, James would like to send shoutouts to his wife Cinda for fully supporting him during his build, and to all that helped him with the build.

Hats off to James on a solid build, and saving another UCF10 from the salvage yard.

Lexus adds performance, style, content and technology for the 2013 model year with the Lexus GS, as it prices the GS 350 to be the most competitive choice in the segment.

The new 2013 GS combines bold, dynamic styling, precise handling, innovative technology, and a spacious interior. In addition to the GS 350, the 2013 GS 350 hybrid model and an available F-Sport package will be launched in early 2012.

Toyota revealed the NS4 advanced plug-in hybrid concept vehicle today at the 2012 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit. The NS4 signifies Toyota’s vision for future mobility with a focus on connectivity and the human interface.

Toyota engineers were challenged to design a new mid-sized concept for potential global market introduction by 2015. The NS4 concept is a dedicated plug-in hybrid, separate from the Prius family, designed with future mobility requirements in mind.

NS4’s advanced powertrain targets a next-generation Hybrid Synergy Drive plug-in system featuring reductions in component size and weight with improved overall fuel economy, better acceleration and longer all-electric range, while maintaining a short charge time.

Sleek, Futuristic Styling
The NS4 concept signals a new styling direction for the Toyota brand aimed at creating an emotional connection with consumers. NS4 styling lines reflect a new take on the aerodynamics of the modified triangle, with a low height and cabin-forward tilt. The distinctive open trapezoid grille is accented by a floating lower spoiler and wing-like daytime running lights wrapping around to a sculpted fender. Rear lamps wrap around the sides of the vehicle to quarter sections layered into blistered fenders, while the rear lamp wings create a sharp edge and the effect of a rear spoiler.

The A-pillars are ultra thin for improved driver visibility while maintaining roof crush integrity. The roof line profile, lift back design and powered swan-wing doors create greater accessibility and efficient functionality.

Increased Connectivity
Traditional vehicle development cycles average four years, but this is rapidly changing in the digital age. Vehicles have become another communication hub in the connected-consumers lifestyle and automakers must integrate the latest technologies into their product offerings. In fact, connected vehicles are the third-fastest growing technological device, behind smartphones and tablets.

Toyota has formed special alliances with technology leaders such as Microsoft, Intel and Salesforce to explore the creation of seamless vehicle interfaces with emerging technologies. These alliances will help ensure Toyota is at the forefront of this emerging sector of the automotive market.

The NS4 concept’s Human-Machine Interface (HMI) provides a user interface built around a multi-touch screen with the look and feel of a smartphone. The simple, intuitive operation conveys information quickly while minimizing distractions and maximizing driver awareness. The multimedia and vehicle-controls enhancement also will direct air conditioning, audio, battery-charge and navigation functions. The HMI system is even capable of “learning” driver preferences and habits to anticipate driver responses in specific environments and situations. This concept represents a truly connected vehicle, offering the latest technology in a responsible and convenient package.

State-of-the-Art Safety Features
The NS4 introduces a next generation Pre-Collision System (PCS) with lane departure, rear-end and pedestrian collision avoidance technologies designed to predict collisions under certain circumstances and help avoid them. This PCS uses millimetre-wave radar and stereo cameras mounted on the front of the vehicle to detect and react to lane departure, pedestrians and other vehicles. In addition, the system emits near-infrared beams to enhance PCS recognition at night. This driver assistance feature helps to avoid collisions with other vehicles, road-side obstructions, and pedestrians by applying the brakes and manipulating steering.

The current generation PCS, available in certain Lexus and Toyota vehicles, is designed to identify certain objects directly in the road ahead. If PCS determines that a collision is imminent, the brake assist system is placed in standby mode, a warning is displayed and a buzzer sounds. If PCS determines that a collision is unavoidable, the system still will alert the driver via a warning light, warning display and buzzer, apply the brakes and automatically retract the driver and front passenger seatbelts.

Adaptive Driving Beam (ADB) headlights help prevent vision-impairing glare to oncoming drivers and pedestrians. Using a camera mounted behind the front grille and partial shielding inside the headlights, this feature allows drivers to maintain near-high beam illumination to improve nighttime visibility.

The pop-up hood structure automatically raises the rear of the hood to increase the space underneath, helping to reduce pedestrian head injuries caused by a collision with the front of the vehicle, within certain speed ranges. This innovation is the result of testing and verification using both conventional crash-test dummies and Toyota’s Total Human Model for Safety (THUMS) virtual model.

Using sub-millimetre wave radar, the Blind Spot Monitor (BSM) is designed to detect a vehicle in the adjacent lane and visually alerts the driver using visual indicators placed in the upper dash.

Four new glass technologies are integrated into the windshield and front triangle, door, and rear windows to improve driver visibility, gas mileage and electric driving mode mileage efficiency:
•Hydrophobic coating – Fluorine coated glass causes rain drops to form into semispherical shapes for improved visibility and rain drop elimination (also used on the roof solar panel)
•Anti-fog film – High performance resin material with anti-fogging characteristics and increased durability
•High ultraviolet (UV) absorbing inner-layer – Removes 99 percent of harmful UVA and UVB rays
•Anti-solar film with radio-wave transparency – Reduces the internal vehicle temperature and improves electronic device functionality

Inner and outer rear view mirrors have been replaced with cameras that provide the driver with a panoramic rearward view. The rearward image is displayed on a dedicated dashboard mounted screen above the navigation screen and provides a wider view than conventional rear view mirrors. The rearward panoramic camera view working in combination with the Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) system enhances driving visibility.

“Toyota has had much success with the hybrid vehicles already on the market, which has laid a strong foundation to introduce future advanced technologies,” said Tony Wearing, Senior Managing Director, Toyota Canada. “The NS4 is a demonstration of Toyota’s continued commitment to create vehicles that are safe, efficient and convenient for all drivers.”

Sporting a new Lexus spindle grille, new 20-inch alloy wheel design and upgraded interior for the 2013 model year, the eight-passenger LX 570 continues to deliver on challenging off-road adventures as well as luxurious daily driving.

The 2013 LX 570 gets a new look at both the front and rear. New LED daytime running lights complement new headlamp design and new larger fog lamp bezels. Taillamps are also updated, while the rear license plate surround gets a revised look and the tow hitch cover is more integrated. Both front and rear bumpers are refreshed, and the rear bumper protector is enhanced by a chrome accent.

Turn signals have been added to the side mirrors, and wider bodyside moldings sport a new look.

The spacious, eight-passenger cabin of the LX 570 receives a number of upgrades and changes. The driver’s seat gets a new Easy Access system, which makes entering and exiting the vehicle easier. The steering wheel and driver’s seat automatically retract when the ignition is turned off. Front seats also feature improved cooling, and a 120-volt power outlet has been added to the middle row. The instrument panel has been updated and a new colour display is applied. A dark chrome finish for the centre instrument cluster and front side air vents, along with a new chrome accent above the glove box, freshen the look of the instrument panel as well.

The cabin of the 2013 LX 570 also gets mahogany wood trim. Parchment replaces Cashmere as an interior leather trim color. Two new exterior colors are available: Mercury Grey Metallic and Satin Cashmere Metallic, replacing Twilight Gray Metallic and Golden Almond Metallic.

Engine/Transmission/Drivetrain/Performance
The LX 570's 5.7-litre V8 delivers the punch and towing power demanded in this segment. The powerplant produces 383 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and peak torque of 403 lb.-ft at 3,600 rpm. Crucial to LX customers who tow with their vehicles, 90 percent of peak torque is available at just 2,200 rpm.

The LX 570 is equipped with an electronically-controlled six-speed automatic transmission that estimates road conditions and predicts the driver's intention in order to select the appropriate gear ratio for the vehicle's speed and the driving conditions. A sequential shift mode allows the driver to select gears manually. Even at very low speeds, such as trail driving, the transmission operates smoothly and imperceptibly.

The LX 570's transfer case provides full-time four-wheel drive that is equally adept at handling the rigors of slippery winter weather or deep mud or snow. The system uses a TORSEN® limited-slip locking centre differential to distribute power 40:60 front-to-rear, directing more power to the wheels with the best grip should slippage occur. Four-wheel Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) employs both brake and throttle intervention to help control wheel spin. Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) helps maintain directional control during cornering and can be disengaged via the “TRAC off” switch.

The updated Crawl Control feature provides optimum throttle and brake modulation when maneuvering over rough, uneven or difficult surfaces. The new Off-Road Turn Assist feature also helps by tightening the turning circles by adding more brake force to the inside rear wheel. The new Multi-terrain Select also allow you to optimize performance by choosing from five types of terrain. Hill-start Assist Control (HAC) helps provide additional control for off-road driving by helping to keep the vehicle from rolling back when your foot moves from the brake to the gas pedal on a steep incline or slippery surface.

Chassis/Body/Suspension/Tires/Brakes
The LX 570’s highly capable chassis is equipped with an advanced suspension system. The high-mount, independent double-wishbone front suspension allows for nine inches of total front wheel travel for outstanding articulation over rough roads and obstacles. The four-link trailing-arm rear suspension retains the solid-axle configuration for strength and durability. Body-on-frame construction provides ruggedness and durability in challenging driving conditions, plus impressive ride isolation characteristics and a 7,000-pound towing capability.

The Active Height Control system lowers the chassis by about two inches for easy entry and exit and returns automatically to its normal height when the vehicle begins to accelerate. An Easy Access mode allows the driver to also lower the vehicle when it is parked. For improved aerodynamics, the AHC system lowers the vehicle at highway speeds. When the transfer case is shifted into low range, AHC raises the vehicle to provide additional ride height in driving situations where chassis clearance is at a premium.

The Adaptive Variable Suspension system provides three modes to control the spring rate and shock absorber damping force to provide optimal handling and comfort for on-road or trail driving. Comfort mode provides a softer response on extremely bumpy roads, while the Normal and Sport modes help provide increasingly greater levels of control for driving a heavily loaded vehicle, driving at higher speeds on paved roads, or driving on unpaved roads.

The standard split five-spoke, 20-inch alloy wheels with Liquid Graphite finish wear 285/50R20 tires. The multi-terrain ABS system determines road-surface conditions and automatically optimizes lock-up control, selecting the suitable ABS profile for on- and off-road driving surfaces. Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) employs the ABS to properly balance braking forces between the front and rear wheels, while Brake Assist (BA) provides auxiliary force to assist the driver during emergency braking.

Standard/Safety/Security Features
The LX 570 is equipped with 10 standard airbags, including driver- and front-passenger knee airbags, front and second-row seat-mounted side airbags in the outboard seating positions, and roll-sensing side curtain airbags that cover all three rows. All eight seating positions feature three-point seatbelts. The second-row seatbelts integrate pre-tensioners for the outboard seats and an ALR/ELR (Automatic Locking Retractor/Emergency Locking Retractor) seatbelt for the center seat.

The LX 570 was the first vehicle in its class to use Active Front Headrests which move upward and forward in the event of certain low speed rear-end collisions when the force of the occupant's body is applied to the seat back.

The LX 570 was also the first in its class to offer available Pre-Collision System with Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. In addition, LX 570 was the first Lexus to offer the optional Wide-view Front and Side Camera feature designed for use in tight settings, such as parking garages. With cameras located within the front grille and under the passenger outside mirror, the driver can check hard-to-view areas by simply pressing a button on the dashboard and viewing the camera images on the standard navigation system screen. The Wide-view Front and Side Camera functions up to a vehicle speed of about 12 kph and can display the front and side views simultaneously in split-screen mode.

Luxury/Comfort/Convenience
A full array of standard luxury amenities includes four-zone independent climate control, heated and ventilated front seats and heated second-row seats (outboard position only), a rear back-up camera, Lexus Navigation System, casual-language voice recognition and nine-speaker Lexus Premium Sound system with iPod/USB connectivity, and streaming music and phonebook download via Bluetooth®.

The standard power-sliding second-row seat slides forward and aft 88.9 mm (3.5 inches) for passenger comfort and cargo storage versatility. The second-row seatbacks provide a convenient 40/20/40 split. The second row seat is specially engineered to make tumbling it forward easy for anyone. A power retractable third-row seat is standard. The split rear tailgate features a power upper door, while the bottom section raises and lowers with minimal effort.

The LX 570 offers an optional Ultra Premium Package that includes a cool box for beverages; semi-aniline leather-trimmed upholstery with contrast stitching, heated steering wheel and mahogany wood trimmed door switch plates. The Ultra Premium Package also comes with additional safety features such as the Pre-Collision System and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.

In addition to the Ultra Premium Package, the new LX 570 now features a rear dual screen rear-seat entertainment system with wireless headphones and three-prong electrical outlet. This system allows two video sources to be viewed at the same time – for instance, one can be used as a DVD player while the other as a game console or audio player.

For audiophiles, a 19-speaker Mark Levinson® Reference Surround Sound audio system is also available with 450-watts maximum power and 15 channels.

Power and performance

The 2012 Lexus GX 460 features a 4.6L V8 that provides outstanding power and responsive performance. This engine is mated to a six-speed Super Electronically Controlled automatic transmission with gate type shifter, giving the GX 460 quick, smooth acceleration while delivering impressive fuel efficiency.

Before the Scion FR-S and Lexus LFA there was one flagship sports car at the top of Toyota’s line-up, the Supra. The final model Mark IV Supra was manufactured between 1992 and 2002 in Japan while only being sold in North American between 1994 and 1999. Despite minor changes over the years, the Supra maintained its sports presence as a high end performance sports car.

Our latest feature comes from our home town of Montreal via Japan. Joel’s Supra originated from Japan and was imported by one of the many shops in Quebec at the time making it a legitimate RHD vehicle. When he purchased the car it had a few modifications already but nothing to what he envisioned a Supra to be.

The Konig wheels and rear spoiler were immediately stripped off for a cleaner look. Joel chose Volk Racing SF Challenge wheels in 19x9.5 in the front and 19x.10.5 in the rear which he acquired through some extensive searching. The Supra is lowered on a set of HKS Hypermax 3 coilovers replacing the optional Bilstein set which were originally on the vehicle. A full 5 piece Do-Luck aero kit was installed to complete the exterior while providing and ultra clean look.

Under the hood is the legendary 2JZ-GTE (all I can hear is Jesse from The Fast and the Furious saying No Shit, this will decimate all..) Joel already had some goodies under the hood including a Greddy intercooler, air filter and blow off valve. The SARD 800cc injectors along with Tomei regulator help control the proper fuel ratio combined with AEM FIC.

Currently this Supra pushes out over 400hp at the wheels and there are many more modifications planned for the car including new turbos, brakes and suspension. The tuning possibilities are almost endless for this Japanese legend and as we look towards the future we can’t wait to see what happens with the next generation of RWD Sport Coupes.

In preparation for its spring 2012 on sale timing, Scion unveiled its much anticipated fifth model, the 2013 high-performance coupe FR-S compact rear-wheel drive sports car.

The FR-S, which stands for Front-engine, Rear-wheel drive, Sport is Scion’s definition of an authentic rear-wheel-drive sports car with exceptionally balanced performance and handling, compelling style, flexible utility and surprising fuel economy.

“Scion continues to push boundaries following its first year of sales in Canada,” said Larry Hutchinson, Director of Scion in Canada. “With a lineup including the iconic xB, the adrenalized tC and the innovative iQ, the FR-S is a halo, taking Scion to a new level of driving performance.”

The FR-S is a true “scion,” born into a lengthy history of Toyota performance cars and motorsports. The sports car is most inspired by the AE86 generation of the Corolla, better known as the Hachi-Roku, meaning “8-6” in Japanese. The front-engine, rear-wheel-drive coupe was lightweight and well balanced, making it a solid choice for driving enthusiasts.

Inspired by the AE86, the FR-S is designed around the core goal of achieving, “Pure Balance.” The balance begins with the strategic use of the world’s only flat boxer engine in a front-engine, rear-wheel drive configuration. The engine’s compact size and flat shape allow it to be mounted mid-ship and extremely low, giving the car a dynamically favorable front-to-rear weight ratio of 53:47 and a low centre of gravity comparable to some exotic supercars.

The FR-S’s 2.0-litre, naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine is the result of a joint development between Toyota and Subaru. The partnership begins by combining Subaru’s newly developed horizontally opposed engine and Toyota’s cutting edge D-4S injection system that incorporates both direct and port injection. The D-4S system, partnered with a high 12.5:1 compression ratio, results in an impressive 200 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque.

“The FR-S will achieve impressive horsepower and torque, all while it delivers equally impressive fuel economy,” Hutchinson said.

The flat-four mates with either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission. The manual offers quick, precise shifts with a short-throw; while the automatic transmission features aggressive up shifts and sporty rev-matched down shifts that are initiated by steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Power is transferred to the pavement via a limited-slip differential.

The idea of “Pure Balance” is further realized by the FR-S’s lightweight design and compact size. The combination allows the car to be quick and nimble into and out of corners, with dynamic maneuverability and confident handling. The coupe’s weight is kept to a minimum by utilizing an aluminum hood, a solid roof, and by featuring a trunk design instead of a hatchback.

The FR-S’s low weight is matched with a dynamically tuned suspension setup consisting of MacPherson struts up front and a double wishbone system in the rear. Lightweight 17-inch alloy wheels and ventilated disc brakes are on all four corners.

The fierce exterior of the FR-S is a solid reflection of its inner power. The profile, inspired by the Toyota 2000GT, reveals a hood and roof-line that is remarkably sleek and low, giving it an aerodynamic shape that channels air cleanly over to the top. The low stance continues to exaggerate the coupe’s menacing face, which is made up of sharp lines, a wide mouth and angular headlights. The aggressive front fenders protrude upward and boast the iconic ‘86’ piston emblem, which highlights the car’s AE86 heritage as well as its unique new boxer engine. The rear fascia sits low and wide, with aerodynamic lower treatments that surround the sporty dual exhaust system. LEDs illuminate the edgy taillights, while centre-mounted backup lights finish the muscular design.

The FR-S’s interior features a 2+2 seating configuration that is designed with both form and function in mind. The front seats are mounted extremely low and are comfortable yet assertive, while the rear seat folds down flat, creating flexible space. The large centre-mounted tachometer is the focus of the three-gauge cluster, keeping the driver informed of the engine’s vitals. Speed is monitored by both digital and analog gauges.

A pioneering rear-wheel-drive hybrid sedan, the GS 450h combines high power with environmental performance at an unprecedented level. The newly developed high-compression, next-generation D-4S (direct injection 4-stroke gasoline engine superior version) and Atkinson Cycle 3.5-liter V6 2GR-FXE engine with rear-wheel-drive hybrid technology is a world-first combination5.

LDH, which controls Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS), Dynamic Rear Steering (DRS) and other elements to realize the ideal vehicle slip angle, delivers an outstanding sense of security in the high speed range, edge and agility in the medium range and good maneuverability in the low speed range.

2. LFA Nürburgring Package
The LFA Nürburgring Package, named to convey respect and gratitude to Nürburgring, an LFA development site, is a model that emphasizes circuit cruising at a level higher than the standard specifications. The vehicle is scheduled for production in 2012.

LFA Nürburgring Package
The vehicle features a carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic front spoiler and fixed rear wing to further enhance aerodynamic performance, and comes with a suspension designed for circuit racing and custom wheels for improved maneuverability and stability.

The maximum output has been raised to 420 kW (571 PS) over the base LFA's 412 kW (560 PS) through improvements such as higher compression.

Orders for the LFA and LFA Nürburgring Package, limited to a total of 500 units, closed in January 2010.

Lexus will reveal the new 2013 GS 350 mid-size luxury sedan with F SPORT package at the 2011 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show in Las Vegas.

The Lexus press conference to reveal the 2013 GS 350 with F SPORT package will take place on Tuesday, Nov. 1 at 1:30 p.m. PDT at the outdoor Lexus exhibit tent, located between the Central and South Halls of the Las Vegas Convention Center. Following the press conference, media will have an opportunity to experience track rides in the new GS 350 with F SPORT package.

The GS 350 with F SPORT package will be on display at the Lexus tent from Nov. 1 – 4. Unique to the F SPORT package will be aggressive 19-inch wheels, F SPORT-tuned Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS), thicker anti-roll bars, bushing changes, and new larger front brakes with high friction pads. In addition, rear-wheel drive (RWD) models will be equipped with 19-inch staggered width wheels and Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS). Inside, the new package also features a sporty attitude with a new 16-way power driver’s sport seat, unique interior design treatment and available F SPORT exclusive red leather interior.

The all-new F SPORT package will also offer our customers a more aggressive and sporty appearance coupled with enhanced handling characteristics and driving.”

Engine/Transmission/Drivetrain/Performance

As with the GS 350, the GS 350 with F SPORT package is powered by an advanced 3.5-liter V6, with four cams, and four valves per cylinder and dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence. At 306 horsepower, it is one of the most powerful base engines in the segment, as well as the only one with both port and direct injection. It propels the car from 0-100 km/h in approximately 5.7 seconds and at the same time, fuel economy has been improved.

Acceleration from 50 to 80 km/h can take just 3.0 seconds, and improved engine sound characteristics complement the bolder, more energetic personality of the new GS. The six-speed sequential shift automatic transmission has paddle shifters and sport driving functions as standard equipment.

The transmission incorporates many features adopted from the Lexus IS F high-performance sedan — including faster shifts, and downshift throttle blips — to support four driving modes that can be operated by toggling the Lexus Drive Mode selector. In addition to the Normal mode, the driver can customize the driving experience using ECO, Sport S and Sport S+ modes.

An optional electronically controlled all-wheel-drive system is designed to enhance traction in a variety of driving conditions. The system can vary front-to-rear torque balance from 50/50 to as much as 30/70, depending on driving conditions, for exceptional control.

Chasis/Body/Susension/Tires/Brakes

To provide a more engaging driving experience, including a new aerodynamic body, a completely new platform with a wider stance and stiffer structure, a transmission with quicker shifts, distinctive engine sound and exhaust notes, and better seat support, Lexus engineers looked to the Lexus LFA supercar for inspiration.

The new platform has been designed to be more rigid. Engineers conducted extensive platform testing, ultimately increasing the number of spot welds and adding laser welds in very specific locations. The track, wider by almost two inches, works in combination with a revised suspension design to help ensure a more solid stance and superior cornering performance.

The new suspension system is designed to help guide the 2013 GS through corners with precision. In the front, upper and lower control arms are made from aluminum and employ larger bushings. The rear subframe has been completely redesigned to accommodate an all-new multi-link rear suspension, using improved suspension geometry that helps retain tire cornering force and enhances rear control. With the stiffer platform and lighter components, the shocks can use lighter-viscosity oil, so they move easily and respond to small inputs more quickly.

The use of front and rear aluminum control arms helps reduce unsprung weight and results in significant improvements in agility, roll damping, ride comfort, body control and steering precision. Overall, the suspension is lighter and stronger, allowing it to react to driver input readily, and ride quietly without harshness.

The GS 350 with F SPORT package will offer an optional newly developed Lexus Dynamic Handling (LDH) system with Dynamic Rear Steering (DRS) for those seeking more agility. This leading edge platform technology offers Lexus’ first integration of DRS; Electric Power Steering; and Variable Gear Ratio Steering. Monitoring vehicle speed, steering direction and driver inputs, the system calculates the optimum angle for all four wheels. LDH helps to optimize the vehicle slip angle. Using VGRS in the front and DRS in the rear, the system can independently manage both front and rear wheel steering angles to help improve turn-in response, rear grip, vehicle control and overall agility when cornering.

The latest generation of Lexus’ unique Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management system coordinates Lexus Dynamic Handling; the Anti-lock Braking System; Traction Control; Vehicle Stability Control; and Adaptive Variable Suspension. Adaptive Variable Suspension helps front and rear wheel control and provides agile, sharp and confident driving behavior with a more direct response to the driver’s actions. The LDH system monitors vehicle speed and yaw rate, steering angle and speed, and lateral G to calculate the required rear wheel steering input, to a maximum DRS angle of 2.0 degrees. At most speeds below 80 km/h the front and rear wheels turn in opposite directions. In certain conditions at speeds over 80 km/h the front and rear wheels turn in the same direction.

Further coordinating DRS with VGRS and AVS, the Lexus Dynamic Handling system will automatically customize the adaptive suspension tuning and active safety systems to suit road conditions, vehicle speed and driving style, giving drivers the confidence to fully utilize the exceptional driving performance of the GS with F SPORT package.

The GS 350 RWD with F SPORT package will be exclusively equipped with 19-inch staggered width wheels paired with 235/40/19 front and 265/35/19 rear tires, the widest rear tires ever on a Lexus sedan. The wider width wheels allow for a sportier look, and will also help provide added traction. All-wheel drive (AWD) models will be paired with 235/40/19 all-season tires in the front and rear.

Safety/Security Features

As with the GS 350, the GS 350 with F SPORT package will be standard equipped with 10 airbags, including a knee airbag for both front driver and passenger. Rear seat occupants have seat-mounted side airbags, and all four outboard occupants are equipped with side curtain airbags. Also standard are new Whiplash Injury Lessening front seats designed to help limit excessive head movement, and help decrease the severity of whiplash-type injuries in certain types of rear-end collisions. Standard seatbelts with pretensioners with force limiters used for front and outboard rear seats further assist occupant protection.

Other available safety systems include a Night Vision System that enhances driver visibility at night; Heads Up Display; a Blind Spot Monitor that helps detect vehicles in rear/side blind spots; and Lane Keep Assist (LKA) with Lane Departure Warning (LDW). GS is the first in its segment to offer LKA with active steering torque to provide a small amount to assist in maintaining course, while the LDW feature alerts the driver if the system detects that the vehicle is beginning to drift out of the lane.

Exterior Design

The 2013 GS expresses a new generation of Lexus’ design philosophy with its precisely sculpted exterior and will lead the rest of the lineup in an entirely new direction. When designers shaped the GS they visualized the flow of air around it and, like the LFA supercar, maximized aerodynamic efficiency for low coefficient of drag.

Following the inspirational design cues of the IS line-up and CT 200h, the F SPORT package separates itself from the GS line-up with distinctive exterior details. To display its aggressive attitude, the GS 350 with F SPORT package will be outfitted with a sport front bumper and rear lower valence, rear lip spoiler, unique F SPORT mesh grille inserts and F SPORT badging.

The GS fuses distinctive style with engineering functionality. The signature spindle grille with its trapezoidal contours fully integrates into the aggressive front bumper allowing for efficient airflow. Air inlets located on the outer edges of the lower grille serve as cooling ducts. This distinctive Lexus design feature combined with the deep-set, high-tech headlamps and L-shaped LED daytime running lamps further express the vehicle’s confident and dynamic character. The headlamps use a projector beam design, adding a strong, chiseled appearance and excellent illumination. Fins incorporated into the side of the tail lamps and the design of the trunk area all help direct air over and past the car. The rear bumper underbody area was designed for reduced wind resistance to help keep the car firmly planted on the ground.

From the side, the GS projects the image of a spacious sport sedan with a road-hugging wider stance. The tapered lower rocker panel and the short front overhang give the vehicle a sense of motion. Width-enhancing front and rear wheel arches add an athletic stance-enhancing the vehicle’s dynamic presence.

The rear bumper features a distinctive exhaust diffuser and centered aero fins to help control underbody airflow. Combined with the L-shaped LED tail lamps, a Lexus design cue, these rear bumper features lend a high-performance appearance. Overall, the new GS sheet metal represents a significant extension of the Lexus L-finesse philosophy that is the core of all Lexus product design.

The GS 350 with F SPORT package will feature two new colors: Crimson Red and Sonic Silver, and also be available in Starfire Pearl, Mercury Grey metallic and Obsidian. Vehicles in Crimson Red will benefit from glass flakes incorporated into the coating that adds a high level of brilliance to the paint. Lexus engineers developed a new advanced coating process for Sonic Silver. The GS 350 will be the first Lexus to adopt this new coating technology. Vehicles with the Liquid Platinum exterior will appear more radiant as an additional metallic texture gives both strong shading and defined, sharp highlights. This metallic effect makes subtle and defined bodylines more noticeable and the surface appears finely polished.

Interior Design

To complement the aggressive-looking exterior of the F SPORT package, the interior will feature an exclusive design treatment with smooth striated aluminum trim, unique perforated leather trim, black headliner and aluminum pedals. Distinctive F SPORT badging will be showcased on the steering wheel. Focusing on the driver, the F SPORT package will feature a new 16-way power sport seat for increased lateral support. The driver’s seat will include a Lexus­first with power side bolsters, thigh support, adjustable seatback and four-way lumbar. To complete the uniqueness of the F SPORT package, a striking red leather interior will also be available.

Painstaking attention to detail was applied to the GS cabin as well, to create a balance of luxurious and technological amenities and emotional design. The new layout of the long, sculpted dash gives the driver and front passenger a sense of roominess through its clean center stack and new, large high-resolution center control display placed deep near the front windshield. Most of the comfort and convenience controls, such as audio and climate, were relocated to provide a cleaner and more sophisticated dash layout.

The interior includes a number of embedded premium upgrades as standard equipment. A new energy-saving auto climate control system called S-Flow uses the occupant-detection system to focus airflow only to the front area where passengers are actually seated, a first-in-class technology. A next-generation Remote Touch with one-push confirmation is standard on all models and enables smooth, intuitive operations control.

The Remote Touch allows the user to operate the climate, audio, phone controls, optional navigation system and more. The screen menus are selected with the controller, eliminating the need to reach out. Remote Touch also reduces eye movement and helps users operate functions with reduced effort and distraction. A standard rear back-up camera helps add convenience.

The finely crafted cabin detail is complemented further by ambient lighting that unobtrusively welcomes and guides the user into the vehicle, providing a carefully designed experience. New white LED lights are sequentially lit to illuminate the areas around the doors, center console and footwells. A new analog clock with LED indicators, carved from an ingot, adds a unique touch, at once both modern and traditional.

Toyota Motorsport GmbH (TMG) has set a new lap record for an electric vehicle (EV) at the legendary 20.8km Nürburgring Nordschleife circuit in Germany.

The TMG EV P001, with 100% electric powertrain and Jochen Krumbach at the wheel, set a new lap record of 7mins 47.794secs to beat the previous lap record, which stood at 9mins 1.338secs, by a very substantial margin.

Using two electric motors, the TMG electric powertrain has a top speed of 260km/h which combined with 800Nm of torque to achieve impressive speeds on the extremely challenging Nordschleife track, which includes significant elevation changes and lengthy flat-out sections.

TMG’s target prior to the 29 August record run was to become the first electric vehicle break the eight-minute barrier and this was achieved comfortably on a day when the notoriously changeable Nürburgring weather stayed fine, although track temperatures were relatively low.

Such performance shows TMG’s electric powertrain is ideal to power any future single-make electric motorsport series and TMG will begin commercial sales of this technology in 2012. TMG continues to advance its electric vehicle capability for motorsport applications with in-house development of the electric powertrain and ongoing investigations into alternative chassis solutions.

Pascal Vasselon, TMG’s Technical Director, said: “The goals for this project were twofold: obviously we wanted to set a new EV lap record and I am very pleased we could achieve that so comprehensively. On the other hand, we also wanted to learn more about the operation of our electric powertrain in extreme circumstances; in motorsport there is no more extreme circuit than the Nürburgring. On the record lap the TMG EV P001 performed better than in testing due to the improvement we already could make based on that experience. We have enhanced our electric powertrain development thanks to the information our engineers have gained and our future EV products will benefit from this project.”

Rob Leupen, TMG’s Director Business Operations, said: “This is a very impressive achievement which really shows the huge potential for electric powertrains to deliver fast, exciting action on the race track. There’s no doubt that electric motorsport can be every bit as thrilling as traditional racing and it was an amazing sensation to watch the TMG electric vehicle fly past on the Nordschleife, with only the sound of wind rushing past and tyres squealing. To achieve a new lap record at the first attempt, and by such a huge margin, is a great achievement and I am very proud to see TMG’s name in the record books. But this is not the end of the story for TMG and I hope we will see our electric powertrains in action on the track again soon.”

The new lap record was completed on road-legal tyres, using the complete Nordschleife track. It was verified by independent lap timing.
