The world of four-wheel drive rally ridiculousness has generally been dominated by the likes of Ford, Subaru and Mitsubishi, all of whom provide a heavily factory backed effort in the hopes of, well, destroying each other. Last year, the newly introduced Global RallyCross took the best from these manufacturers and pit them against each other in the winner-take-all blood bath that is rallycross. Eight cars at the start line, going full bore into the first corner? Yes. Carnage please.
At the front you have the Ford Fiesta's, gaining world wide notoriety with Ken Block's Gymkhana's youtube shenanigans with Subaru building a name for itself on the World Rally Championship with Mitsubishi clawing at its heels. You'd expect these manufacturers to stop at nothing to ensure rally domination and you'd be right; what you don't expect to see is the name Saab being a thorn in their side. Enter the Scott-Eklund Rally Team.
We've been following the Scott-Eklund RallyCross Team in their endeavor into the Global RallyCross Championship and they are making themselves known as a David among Goliaths. Most notably seen as a privateer entry in to the GRC, the Scott-Eklund Rally Team started as a partnership between Swedish rally legend Per Eklund and British RallyCross vice champion Andy Scott. Joining the ranks is the highly experienced Samuel Hubinette, whom you may remember from the Formula Drift series. Together along with Champion Racing in Pompano Beach, FL, the Scott-Eklund RallyCross team have build a pair of Saab 9-3 monsters to take on the likes of Ford and Subaru. And the numbers do not lie. Multiple heat wins and top five finishes have secured the Scott-Eklund team as a forced to be reckoned with. The humidity and sheer speed of Charlotte Motorspeedway, along with the incredible heat and technically difficult jump of Texas Motorspeedway are done and dusted. Now their sights are set on the ESPN X-Games, the Olympics of rallycross. In less than two weeks the red and orange Saab's will be blasting their way through the streets of downtown Los Angeles with no less vigor and excitement than we expect. This time it will be on a global scale, with RedBull/Citreon's hired gun and multiple WRC World Champion Sebastien Loeb as the team to beat. You better believe that Andy Scott and Samuel Hubinette will give the factory backed teams hell and Intuned Online will be there to keep you up to date. Stay tuned!
